Arrow My recent 6MT Oil Change Story

After the last 3 years (my daughter) of following the dealer recommended oil changes to not prolong your cars value (and having time on my hands) I changed the oil in my wifes TSX (I hate FWD) so I was inspired to go back and to mine.

I could not loosen the oil filter cap as I have done many times with my strap wrench. Tisher sells them for $30k I found one on my local Snap On truck for $19.95.

Second, oil was dirty but I don't have a clear idea of when my oil was last changed at the dealer. Several clips and the "trap" door are now missing to my oil drain plug. Wow. Top that, the washer on the drain bolt was doubled up. Well, forget it. I'm glad I had a chance to re-connect with my car.

So today, I decided to change the 6MT fluid with Royal Purple Synchromax. Reading the treads, just under 2 quarts were needed. Removing the filler bolt did not spill any old fluid. I used about 1/3 of a Royal Purple quart to flush the gearbox and used the rest to fill it up. About a little more than half or less of the second bottle, the tranny started leaking! Well, at least it was clean and purple. I plugged it up while it was still leaking kinda slowly.

Any chance of over fill?

Test drive now...

TIA,
Danny

Your right, I was changing the oil at the same time and also include those pics. The long funnel like contraption is what I used to change tranny oil. During th engine oil change, I cleaned that oil filter canister pretty OCD'ish...

I changed the oil on my "new" 2007 328xi this morning before going to work. I picked it up with 49K miles and so a "free" oil change was not going to happen before the warranty expired.

I did not realize that so much oil was in there and it overflowed my pan and spillled on the garage floor. Oops!

Now I just have to surf this site until I can find how to reset the computer.

The leaking part only came on the refill part. Once the fluid reaches max (the fill hole level), the tranny is full, new fluid starts coming out and you can plug it up. My tranny never leaked after the change.

easy.... put in key, turn on car, but dont start it... wait til dash screen is clear of everything with simply the time on it, push down the odmeter button, hold until a triagnle image appears, while still hold the odmeter button, push the BC button and should bring you into the service menu, from there simply cycle through and use the BC button to reset
