Have I damaged my 335i engine?

Hello Guys,

May some of you think that I'm going nuts ,but a question is bothering my mind many days now...

The BMW user's manual advises to drive smoothly the car for the first 2000km. As I got my 335i on previous Friday and I got really excited during the first 1-2 days, I drove the car a "bit" faster than I should (according to manual) for 150-250 km. I didnt do any extreme fancy things just several kick-downs to enjoy the monstrous torque straight to my head ,as well driving to speeds close to 210 km.

(for your info the manual suggest to drive until 4500revs or/and 160KM )

Since then I'm driving like woman (slow and softly ) until i reach the first 2000-2500 KM.

For some reason I feel like the car became a bit slow and less "strong" because of my driving manners the first hours of its life. Could that be true or this is just my idea cause I'm getting used to it as long as i drive it??

Is it so important to drive cautiously on the beggining? Could it be possible for its performance to be reduced by that?

Thanks to those kind enough to answer me...

No, it's all in your head. Go drive a really slow car for a couple of days, then hop back in your car!

Found this site in another thread. Was actually looking to get some feedback on it. This guy RECOMMENDS beating on your car for the first few miles. He is very specific on how to go about it, but any veterans please feel free to tell me if this is bullsh!t or not.

Here's what everyone needs to do to a BMW.

1) Drive your car from day 1 the same way you would drive it 4 months in. If you are a fast driver don't granny your car and drive it like a little punnani . BMW's are made to be driven fast from KM # 1

+1 - my baby has ~350 miles on it in a week and I am driving like I want to drive. I have taken it, may be a couple of times, past 4500 RPM since even below it, it's potent enough to go as fast as you want it to go, in urban traffic...

Here's my tried and true break in technique. Tried and true based on years of racing motorcycles with outputs over 200hp/liter, and never having an in-season rebuild.

First several heat cycles take it relatively easy. As in follow the recs of the manufacturer. Notice I said heat cycles and not miles. A heat cycle is bringing it slowly up to full operating temp, drving for awhile, and letting it cool completely down. The point of this is to get the metal parts to like each other and abrade the worst of the micro-imperfections without causing excessive heat stress, as local heat stress is the worst enemy of a new engine.

After 5-6 of these, then brief runs to high RPM are good in the next few heat cycles. These should be rolling starts. This seats the piston rings and continues the micro-abrasion process on the metals.

After this process, change oil/filter and let er rip, but I usually do a few more heat cycles before sustained high RPM running. Yes, you will have to pay for this oil change, and many people skip it here, but I feel it is important. Why? Remember those micro-particles of metal that are smoothed? Where do you think they now reside? Yes, in your filter and oil pan. Get them out!

If you are real picky, you can send your oil off for analysis, various labs offer this service for low cost. I would not send my break in oil...but it might be interesting to see the results. then again, since its under warranty unlike a race engine...perhaps you dont care!

Agree with the tecnique. After the first couple of hundred miles, oil change then drive it like you stole it.

I have 850 miles on my car in 5 days... i got Monday... i got home friday from south beach and i was like DAMN... i kept it under 5 for the first 600 miles but i floored it till i got to 5k... around 600 miles i started taking it to 6k ... and now i am getting pretty close to 7k...

If the car feels slower its probably because your afraid to mess it up and your not pushing it as hard as you should...

AT LAST ,I reached the 2600Km on Friday 1st Dec (BMW advices for a break-in until the first 2000KM).I pushed the pedal a liitle bit further to 4.5-5.0 revs.

Yesterday I couldn't behave myself and I reached 260Km/h on the highway!!!
I couldn't believe how fast ,this damn thing ,reaches this kind of speed.WOW
