As the title states, I'm looking for matte or gloss black kidney grills for my e90 (Pre-LCI). I prefer to pick up a used set.

wrap a set in gloss black vinyl! That's what I did, cost me 25 bucks

I second that. Vinyl is a much better option than I think most people consider. For curved surfaces at can me labor intensive, but fortunately the kidneys are not that big. The bonus is, it protects the original surface and will likely stand up better to road debris.

You can go the paint route like I did too. There's a DIY on here about it. Just takes some sand paper, a can of black spray paint, and a can of clear coat. I've had mine on for about two years now and I have to give them a new coat of paint every now and then, but I don't mind. It's almost impossible to completely avoid little chips and dings when it's at the front of your car. Total cost of various grits of sand paper, and two cans of spray paint should be less than $10. WAAAAY better than paying $75 for aftermarket stuff being sold on various sites.
