Isn't the entertainment option a waste?

I read many post on here and I don't believe anyone order (on either the 535i or 550i) the enterainment package (the video screens/DVD for the passengers).

I have them on my SUV but would not get them for the F10.

I am sure that whoever has little kids would already have an SUV or a van with the entertainment package.

The different options serve different people's wants. Let's face it, it's a luxury to buy this car and the options reflect that. No one really needs convenience access, heads up display, etc. The 5 series is a $50-80,000; with that, if someone wants a DVD player or heated seats for passengers, so be it. Also, it is nice to be able to afford such a car.

Ditto. Have SUV with ceiling mounted DVD entertainment. Any time we're on a long road trip we take Mommy's SUV so we need the DVD. Whenever we're in Daddy's car, we're not going on long trips and the DVD screens would only get kicked.

I would have thought that, with adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and parking assist, the driver could safely sit in the back and watch tv.

It's definitely not something I'd pay for on a car in which I'd also have to be the driver. It's possible, however, that if I had kids/teens sitting in the back, I might spring for it to keep them entertained on trips to grandma's and such. But as it goes, I have only adult passengers and they are just going to have to behave themselves without the entertainment package.

In India, I'd bet this is a highly popular option because pretty much anyone who buys a 5er is being driven in it not driving it. Heck, over there, pretty much anyone that owns a car is being driven rather than driving. The same is more or less true in China for cars in this price range. And those are the two largest growth markets for car sales.

For me it's more a choice between after market DVD screens or the BMW original. When going on long trips we always take the 5-series and it's a calmer trip if the kids are entertained in the back. I would wan't to drive an SUV or anything when we drive trhough Germany on the autobahn.

That's why it's an option... For people to opt in or out. By reading this thread I can see that it's mostly "opt out". I would have ordered it, if I even would have had a choice. Did I say that right... For some reason it doesn't sound correct.

Here in Chile, you get what you get. 523, 528, 535, 550 all get different options preconfigured as the importer/distributor sees fit. The higher the model the more option you get standard. Can't add or subtract. That goes the same with color combinations. Silver = black interior, no other choice. We usually end up thanking the dealer for selling us the car. The last part was a joke but it sure feels that way. Sure you can order the way you want but they frown upon that unless you're ordering an M3 ($120k here) or higher.

You guys are right... When I lived in the states our car of choice in long trips was my Yukon Denali. My 2 year old daughter hated riding on my wife's CLS because it had no doovie (my daughter's pronunciation of "movie").

So, I installed a portable dual display DVD player for my daughter on my new 528's headrests... Yuk! This was the only way to install something without making it look like a hanging closet organizer that's typical of kid's DVD car kits. I'll post some pictures of this setup later so you guys can see how I installed it, but I sure would have liked the entertainment option...
