Oh boy another oil thread.

Here is a list of approved oil:

http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx

Here is a discussion about oil http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=395811

OP: By the way, BMW 5w30 is approved. The oil you mentioned (unless it was Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30 or Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30) is not.

I don't think there will be too many issues, but you may experience reduced gas mileage.

If it really bothers you, have them change it

So I called the Indy shop back and they told me that the reason for synthetic 5w-40 and not 5w-30 is that its actaully factory (assuming BMW) and state recommandation because I live in state of Washington (the weather and all).

Are you talking about your initial idle on startup, or after the car gets going?

1) Ask them for the exact oil they used not just the weight. 2) Click on this link http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx print it out and show the Indy shop.

AMS might mean amsoil. Amsoil is not approved, but others on here swear by it. I perform long oil change intervals (10-15k) so I only use approved oil. If you plan on changing it at 5k then I wouldn't worry about it.

By the way, read my sig, you may need to invest in the BT tool or peake tool.

In that case he's fine. The Amsoil 5w-40 euro oil has been used in BMW's for over a decade without problems.

Sorry - AMSOIL isn't approved by anyone.

They are very careful with their wording to make it seem as someone has blessed their oil but it is full of deception. From their own statement it is obvious that they don't believe it themselves.

From their site. Please note the items (and my comments in parentheses) I've highlighted.

"AMSOIL European Car Formula Synthetic 5W-40 Motor Oil (AFL) is specially formulated for the lubrication needs of modern European gasoline and diesel cars and light trucks. Formulated with advanced AMSOIL synthetic base stocks, premium additives and a 5W-40 viscosity rating, AMSOIL AFL is the preferred oil for virtually all European automobiles, especially turbo-charged models. (preferred by whom?) It is one of the only oils in North America to be recommended (by whom?) for the latest specifications of all three major European automakers - Volkswagen (Audi), BMW and Mercedes-Benz - and the latest North American API specification. AMSOIL European Car Formula is highly versatile for multiple applications." (to include weedeaters and leafblowers)

The bottom line is that nobody knows what specifications (if any) it meets.

BTW - my maple syrup blend is to be recommended for use in Lexus, BMW, Maserati and Bugatti. since my list includes BMW then you should use it too.

If you can't find my special euroblend, then you can make your ownby using 1 part Canadian maple syrup (Canada is more "Euro" than Vermont,) one part extra virgin olive oil, a dash of Dutch Elm sawdust and a pinch of shredded Parmesan.

Find a BMW shop. Try this site: http://www.bimrs.org

If nothing else, find a shop that has older but well cared for BMWs parked around it.

All true how the fact remains Amsoil and Redline for that matter have been used in BMW's for decades and there have been no reported problems. EVER.

Their history speaks for itself.

Quite frankly, nobody knows about accelerated wear or other issues. The only thing we might be able to deduce is that were no reports of engines imploding that were traced back to the lubricant used.

The majority of guys on these boards trade their cars or rebuild them well before oil issues rear their ugly heads.
