bluetooth passkey question

hey Guys - as some of you know I recently picked up a Z4M Roadster (2007)...it has the premium package so it has bluetooth (no navigation). I was trying to pair my wife's phone and couldn't figure out what the passkey is. I read a thread on here (after searching) that the two ways to get this information if youd don't have your original paperwork (I don't since I bought it used) is to 1) tear apart the carpet in the trunk and expose the bluetooth module that has the PK listed on the device or 2) take your car into a BMW dealer and have them look it up for you.

I live pretty far from the nearest dealership so it's kind of a pain to go in just for this. If I call my service dept and give them the VIN # of the car over the phone, can they look up the bluetooth PK that way? That would save me a trip in (and possibly a service charge).

Nope, they have to connect it to the computer. I was able to get this done for free.

^^^ You have no idea what you are talking about do you?

my pk is 0246, they are different for each car as far as I can tell.

I don't think they can do it by VIN just because that is not a statistic of your car. The only other ways are to tak apart your trunk or find the laminated card. Sorry.

Yea, the older bluetooth (what we are talking about here) is set up much differently than newer bluetooth systems. For example my m3 w/idrive used 0000 as the default passkey (I believe all cars are set with the same numbers)...but for some reason with these Z4's they all have different default passkeys...kind of dumb on BMW's part really.

Oh, and trust me...0000 or 1111 does not work. I tried that already...

Looks like I have to tear apart the trunk or take it in to a dealer...fun fun

find out what dealer they bought it from, they have it on file. At least that's how I got mine. And they gave it over the phone!
If you don't know what dealer, just call any and play stupid. There's a good chance they can look it up via the last 7 digits of the VIN

From experience I know that this is the passkey for 3er, 5er, X5 built before 2009 with the old idrive. The Z4 seems to have an annoying mechanism.

I was not aware that BMW did it that way (the smart way) in the past. I see no reason they should have changed it personally. I am the first person in my family to own a BMW much less a car with BT! Haha.

I know that I tried all reasonable "generic" codes such aas 1234, 0000, 1111, etc and none of them would work. I had to have the panel in the trunk removed to get the PK number off the bluetooth module.

Once I had that, I paired my cell phone with ridiculous ease.

Cheers,

Is this system pretty particular about which phones it will or will not pair with, or is it pretty open? I have an htc smart phone, doesn't seem to recognize the car or the car doesn't recognize the phone. Haven't have bluetooth in a car before, I'm a novice with it.

The system does not seem particular about pairing. The connection when paired varies by phone depending on what is supported or not.

As a matter of interest - the PK number is located on a TCU box, location in the Boot (truck for Yanks) on the wall between the cabin and Trunk.
take out the cover for battery, then the carpet on the back wall, and wallah on the left side of the wall at the bottom is the TCU...u will find sticker required.

I was able to pair my new Samsung Epic 4G with my Z4's bluetooth with no trouble, but I had the bluetooth key number to use. Paired on the first try. And this phone s NOT listed on BMW;s list of approved devices.
