Need some advice on engine codes

Hi,

After my installation of my LSD and M3 parts, my car hasn't been like it was before anymore.
Have to make an appointment with my dealer to get the car inspected, in the meanwhile I used my BT cable to check out some errors:

There are some things that triggered me to check the car:

Engine sound has been different then before the LSD installation, it's a BMW PE, but it currently sounds almost like a standard exhaust.
The shop did somehow damaged my front right light unit
The car is pulling different then before the installation (could be emotion / feeling) more hesitating, more flat, less eager to pull
I had a check engine light, which I assume is somehow caused by a boost leak... (dv?)
After the LSD install, they did not install my drive line correct causing a lot of noise. They fixed this, but at high speed under acceleration there is still noise now and then.

Bottom line, not happy and wondering what these codes mean and how to solve. I have looked up each code, besides the 30ff (pressure leak) I do not get a clear picture what is wrong. (used sources Google, e90post, bentley)

Any one who recognizes these codes?

Sorry to hear about the issues. We were discussing 30ff earlier today. Check the vacuum lines and air intake piping from the intercooler to the manifold. If no boost leak then many have had wastegate hardware fail or even work turbo parts. Usually wastegates from my searching. Could be a coincidence or maybe they adjusted the clamp somehow that controls the wastegate?

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the advice, I think I need to get under the car to to inspect the FMIC piping isn't it? Or can that be done from the upside of the FMIC?

When I had the check engine light, I also heard a quite (one time) strong popping sound from the engine bay. I initialy thought it was a misfire, but now I'm thinking that it could also be my charge pipe...(I have the standard charge pipe, A Stett charge pipe with DV's is on it's way)

What do you think?

Regarding the water pump related codes, my oil temp is normal, and the code's are'nt explained at the sources I had a look at...
Wondering if this could be harmfull to the engine, my dealer does not have time till mid August... :-(

The 30FF is almost certain a boost leak, and quite possibly on the FMIC piping. I had the same error when the dealer replaced my water pump and when they drain the radiator they somehow manage to knock the coupling to the FMIC loose. (On the right had side looking at the car from the front). I could see that this was the hose as the FMIC pressure had blown quite a bit of oil out on the under tray. A must buy an OCC moment seeing all this oil.
The only way you'll get to that pipe is from underneath and take the undertray off.

When my water pump failed it threw 2E81 & 2E82 errors and I got very little warning before it overheated. My oil temp at the time was normal, so you can't use this for anything in this case as the coolant will overheat very quickly if it's not circulating. Car felt down on power before it overheated and it felt like when an ignition coil is about to go. (Running a bit rough)

With the errors from the waterpump, I would guess that either your waterpump or thermostat is on it's way out. For me I could hear the impeller on the waterpump sounding quite knackered, so I knew what it was.

Have a look at this SIB.

Sounds like you have a boost leak for sure. The other stuff im not sure, I would reset and wait again.

use the Bt tool to reset some adaptations and such. (for instance throttle blade and other stuff). Might need to do it more then once.

Some of the earlier 335 had some cooling issues so those are still feasible as well.

I have done the Valve reset today, it took a moment, initialy the gas pedal was not longer working and the rev's went like crazy (I knew this could happen) but after some resets, a ECU reset and turning the engine off and on, the valves are reset.
A rescan gave two errors, related to the valve reset. Afterwards I cleared all codes.
60 Miles later, I did a rescan, only the water pump codes popped up again.
I will bring the car in for a boost leak test and to ask them to perform procedure 1 from the SIB as that check is in line with the codes I have. I hope it's just a sensor or something. But most cost will be the labor to perform the tests.

I read on this forum that some have developed an own boost leak test, but I cannot find back how they do that.. Does one of you know the thread? Would be great to do it myself.

Thanks for all the input, very helpfull!~

I read the SIB another time, seems to be that as I have not only code: 2E81 and 2E85 but also 2E84, the pump should be replaced. One thing that took my attention is the fact that the pump should run on 12v. Out of the freezeframes in the BT output, the voltage seems to be more around 13,x volt.

What could this mean?

I'm considering to do the replacement myself as I think it might be an interesting repair to do.

I also found the Boost test DIY:

New update:

Just back from my dealer:

Regarding the water pump issue, they adviced to first bleed the system to see if there is air in it. (I got a free bottle cooleant ;-)) Based on the codes they think it can be solved without replacing the pump.

The procedure is:

Fill the system with coolant via the expansion tank (AGB). Top up the coolant level to the lower edge of the expansion tank.

Close the expansion tank.

Switch on the ignition.

Set heating to the maximum (temperature); switch on the blower (lowest stage).

Press the accelerator pedal module to the floor for at least 10 seconds. The engine must NOT be started.

Bleeding via EWP takes approximately 12 minutes. Then check the coolant level in the expansion tank; top up to the MAX marking if necessary.

Check the cooling circuit and drain the plugs for leaks.

If the procedure needs to be repeated several times, allow the DME to completely de-energize (remove the ignition key for approx. 3 minutes) and then repeat the procedure, starting from item 3.

Regarding 30ff; they stated that this could be the "P-Bug's" and related lines. They ordered the parts and adviced me to first try it myself to replace them.

(I post this info as other might find it usefull, if it's considered spam, tell me STFU)

Hi Ar,

It depends a bit, when codes 2E81 & 2E85 are the only ones, air in the system could be the cause, 2e81 and another 2e8x code, pump is death.

I have 2e81, 2e84 and 2e85, after clearing the codes only 2e81 and 2e84 are back.
As 2e84 and 2e85 are similair (both communication related) the engineer gave the advice first to do the bleed test.

Anyway, otherwise a new pump ;-)

When my water pump failed the voltage on the freeze frames were between 13.2- 14.6V.

For the water pump DIY... have a look at the pics in this thread. Should give you an idea of what's required + a Bentley manual.

hmm.. that does not sound to positive.... as my freeze frames all show 13.x as voltage... but another theory could be is that the pump is working harder because of air in the system.

Another point of interest is the water temp, it should be around 114 degrees celcius. In the freeze frames it's shown around 9x degrees celcius...
Presure (and the correct temp) is required for the optimal utilisation of the water cooling system. Anyway I'm going to try the bleeding test tommorow with my Bentley manual in the passanger seat ;-)

Great link by the way! That one is going to help me alot!

Remember the freeze frames will only show the temps when an event happens, so don't expect them to show 114C temps. Most of mine showed temps around 85C until the last event showing 105C when the pump stopped running.

From my first 2E82 event to the failure took around 400 miles and even after the failure the pump was still running, but you could hear the impeller had seen better days.

Update:

Bleed test executed, codes cleared with BT, drove 4-5 miles afterwards, the 2e84 and 2e85 codes are gone now, the 2e81 (Speed devviation) came back... I will start to prep the funeral for my water pump....
