335i upgraded FMIC on 335d

Does anyone know if one of the many aftermarket 335i FMCI would fit on a 335d? The OEM units are identical..

Thanks.

If the OEM IC and piping are identical then any aftermarket unit will work. This is like a mathematical identity:

If A=B and B=C then A=C

Worst case scenario you might have to mess with the charge pipes. One thing you should note is that diesel cars run much higher boost levels so make sure your IC is pressure tested to at least 50psi for safety.

I'm fairly sure the 335d isn't running anywhere close to even half that.

IIRC the 335d runs about 24-27 psi. So a little more than that, but not 50 psi! Though who knows where the tunes put that...

is it possible to experience unwanted turbo lag if the aftermarket FMIC you get is not suited to the engine, like in my case?

I wonder if the 335D FMIC is bigger than the one in the 335i. The part number is different for it from the 335i.

Is it possible? Sure, but the volume increase would have to be pretty big. I'm thinking you'd have to double the volume of the tiny stock IC before you'd notice lag.

Possibly but I'd bet that it's the same core with repositioned plumbing.

I would think it would be bigger. I will need to to find one and pull it out and make some measurments.

Although the part nos are different the actual parts are identical.

I was just wondering which model to choose considering the potential lag issues.

Would be nice to test them to see if one is better than the other.

@OP

I hope you end up upgrading your IC. I'm really interested to see what the results are

Are there any other aspects that should be taken in consideration besides the fitting issues? I mean, does the diesel engine require a different core size or shape? Or is it basically in need of as much cooling as possible, just like the 335i?

Could I experience an increased lag? This is what I am afraid of...

I doubt you will have a problem with lag, ours are small as hell and guys are using hpf fmic's which are near double with no issues so you are fine.

My concern is would one of these things even fit (not piping but physically fit into the cavity where it is held). Only one way to find out I guess...

The real question here is whether the diesel turbo(s) (I don't even know if it has one or two) will fit on the n54. 27psi on the n54 would be pretty ridiculous. In a good way.

I was looking into this. The 335i and 335d intercoolers are different part numbers from BMW and are actually different parts. The pipe connections in and out are different. They connect differently. (I looked at both at the same time on the lift.) However, since the aftermarket Intercooler uses usually silicone adapters to connect to the factory piping, I think that most of the 335i intercoolers would work well with maybe a change in the silicone hose connection.

They will not fit. A few reasons :

- they are mounted in a sequential fashion, much like the 4th gen Toyota Supras, the small turbo coming on first and the larger turbo providing the top end power.
- the A/R ratio of the turbine housings are bigger as well as the turbine wheel sizes are different. Would make for a bit of a laggy setup on a 10:1 compression gas engine, when it's designed for a diesel that's much higher (15:1 I think?)

The Pics are the same, but the part numbers are different hence the parts are different in some way - BMW is good at keeping the part nubmers the same for identicle parts, so they are not the same even if the picture they used is!
