Yes or no to Aftermarket Oil Cooler
Okay, So i got a CPO e92, has the sport package but no oil cooler cause its a XI and the original owner didn't pay for the option.
My question is do alot of people run JB3 and stuff without a OEM oilcooler??? or would it be recommended that I get an aftermarket oil cooler by like by AR Design if I want to Jb3 my car later on. What do you guys think? |

Yes it a very good thing to have you really wont know the true power of the car when its
always running 250+. Search the Ar desighn or retrofit kit. I know a couple people that have done aftermarket OC's and they helped alot.

Cost benefit analysis here
-how hard do you really drive? -do you plan to mod your car? If your answers are "just an enthusiastic daily driver" and "no" then you can probably get away with no oil cooler given your climate. If you decide to mod or go to the track, however, an oil cooler is mandatory.

At this time, I am on a limited budget so I can't purchase the list of mods i have written down from spending countless hours on these forums lmao...but yes I do plan to Jb3, intake, downpipes, dv,fmic.

VK motorwerks has their kit. or you can buy the cp-e intercooler that comes with an oilcooler on the top. cp-e would be the best solution because you're really getting the FMIC and OC together and a good price.

The cp-e oil cooler is designed to run in series with a stock OC. You would have to engineer all the connections yourself to install it as a primary OC.
About whether you need an OC at all, either get the OC or skip the downpipes, dv and fmic too and stick to the lowest map. |

Keeping oil temps down is always first priority with me. Especially with the straight 100 degree temps we have been having for the last week and a half....

This is very good advice. I would go with VK oil cooler retro fit, then FMIC before any tune, downpipes, exhaust combo.

The VK kit is a great product but a little more expensive. Also last time I heard they had a bit of a falling out and were holding off on selling any more products, is this still going on?

Make sure what ever oil cooler kit you end up buying does not modify or cut the mounting tabs or end tanks of the core. I've seen another manufacturer do this, and there have been 2 reported cases where the cores (Derale I believe) with clipped mounting tabs have exploded on the Nurburgring........

I have the AR additional front mounted oil cooler. I think it's great. However, I am not sure AR has what you are looking for, that is a retrofit kit for those who have no stock oil cooler, or am I wrong?

Don't waste your money, unless you're planning to take your car to the course track and push it hard on the course.

Did a little research the oil filter housing from OC car is different than the non OC car is different. One has oil line connections other does not thats the only difference. So i say why not just purchase OEM oil filter housin then, 2 braided lines after market OC there you go. Oil filter housin about $290 then oil cooler is your choice.. Its not as expensive as the retro kits there are many selections of OC out there. This is my next mod this comin winter. So i will keep my fellow members posted..

I drive my car hard... but never track it. I do about 15 1/4 mile runs a week for logs and tuning purposes as I dial in my mods. I run map 8 and 9 on JB3 which requires race gas or meth and I have never, ever, ever seen temps above 270. I have no oil cooler never mind two but I think if I took those mods to a circuit track(oval) that I may see a difference.
Even if you drive your car hard, even if you take it to the track for 1/4 runs, even if you tune it aggressively you shouldn't worry about the oil cooler unless you start to see temps above 275 on a regular basis. I don't have an xi so you have 2 more wheels spinning than I do so there may be a variance in temps in your car. Retro kits are usually like 500bucks. I looked into an after market cooler and found an awesome mishimoto but the bridge from the cooler to oil compartment is the trick.
