Vin # for the N54

Don't want to go off-topic on another tread so started this one instead. Want to get info on cars with N54 engines.

So you're saying that a 3 series could have the same sequence as a 1 series with just the last 3 numbers different? Wouldn't BMW have a range for each model they assemble?

I'm not positive, but I believe the serial number doesn't necessarily have a specific identifier or range for a given vehicle....I.E., I don't believe P10000 - P20000 identifies one model of car, for instance. I could certainly be wrong, but that was my understanding.

But car manf. usually recall cars with specific vin number ranges. So therefor, they can distinguish what model car from the assembly and built date.

quick breakdown

the fourth and fifth digits in the VIN are the platform identifier..
as follows

WB = 3series coupe
WL= 3series convertible

two additional digits on the AG code identify the type within the series
73 = 335
33 = 328

but since the full VIN sometimes follows the above convention, the sixth and seventh digits dont alway correlate -- sometimes yes, sometimes no.. .

such as WBA*WB73*
the manufacturer will base there information on the fully decoded VIN not just the last seven ..

cheers

Then see if you can find some data to describe the ranges for BMWs...I haven't looked. You may be right.

Still, for the purpose you're considering this for, the main issue will be whether or not it is worth it to store a lookup table if the serial numbers are spread apart.

No need for serial # apart on a lookup table. All you need is set ranges for each model.

Does this come in PDF format? If so, anyone knows where to download it from?

it's definately worth the money, especially if you plan on installing mods or doing maintenance yourself
