Forgive me if I'm not on the right track but I think your description of your mirror is a bit odd compared to the terminology I usually see regarding rear view mirrors.

Do you mean that you have a rear view mirror (the mirror in the center/top of the windshield) that automatically dims when someone behind you has their lights on such as at night?

I installed one just the other day and it works so well and I am so impressed compared with the performance of my daughters domestic vehicle's auto mirror.

My E90 had to go in for a faulty brake pad sensor and my loaner car (2011 328xi) had the same mirror but with the addition of homelink and the clown nose led blinking alarm light. It was terrible. Dimming was intermittent at best and seemed to not dim at all when the car behind me was close by. I drove 500 miles in the dark so I had plenty of time to fart around with it to see if I could improve it but nothing helped. I wanted my car back soooo bad.
If you are experiencing the same issues, I'm afraid it must be the sensors that detect the amount of light are not the same as some of the other mirrors.

Please use the above information to give us a more clear description of your situation so we can better help.

Yes I have the mirror that you are describing. The centre mirror inbetween the driver and passenger at the top. It used to work but I think it no longer works. I have the clown nose blinker also for the alarm also.. Does the auto-dim only work at night or does it work 24/7? Also I have a bmw e90

the photovoltaic sensors on the front and back compare light intake so if the light behind you is greater than the light in the front (e.g. at night when somebody is behind you) then the mirror will dim. It can work 24/7 but since in the daytime the sun light coming in the front is greater than in the back the mirror will not dim.

Anyone knows if possible to adjust the dimming intensity?
I find it dims too much making it more difficult to see cars, specially when they are in blind area when their headlights are not visible in the mirror but the side of the cars can be seen.
thanks
