Turbo leak?

Well ,I have the bad (and painful) feeling that my 335i is not as fast as it should be. Then again I dont wanna take it to Dynotest as I heard that they are pushing the car too hard during the whole procedure (and its rather expensive here as well).

My question is...if there is problem of a "boost leak", would thefront panel indicated me some kind of error?

Does anyone know??

if you have a small boost leak...you should be able to hear a noticeable "pssh" noise like a blow off valve....

You could always use G-Tech

As far as the fan is big enough there shouldn't be anything to worry about. If they are mapping cars (that might take several hours) on the dyno, it's sure fine to have a short run to test that the power is there, and if not, you will be told what's wrong with it by the dyno operator. They can measure boost and other major variables at the same time.

I will try the Dyno then...I want to be sure on the outcome.

I mean they are pushing the engine to the limits for quite some time. Isn't that true? How long does the Dynotest-run lasts?

Do you have any hard signs or is it just a 'feeling'? Easiest way is to go to another BMW dealer and take a 335i test drive, then compare to yours. If it's not a noticeable difference, then I wouldn't worry about it.

You know what?? I also thought and feared my 335i was making less HP than it should, but my dyno run proved me wrong. The stock car is just so silky smooth, you really don't realize the power until you look down and find your speed somewhere it shouldn't be =)

Just take your car back to the dealer and ask them if they can do a diagnostic on your car.

And taking your car to a dyno is not pushing the car too hard. They usually do pulls from 4th gear and rev it all the way to redline and that's it. If a cars motor can't take that, then maybe it shouldn't be on the road

Its just a feeling plus i had some really hard time today to catch up a car that would be normaly a bit slower than me.

No one is offering a 335-test drive on my territory unfortunately.

probably cheaper to buy a boost gauge and measure the boost....it's really easy to hook up....only tedious part is to mount it inside the cabin permanently...but to temporary hook one up to measure boost...is relatively easy

a new autometer gauge will cost about $50 ~$60

you can usually find used for pretty cheap.....

My car had to go back into the dealer after an accident and after when an engineer took me in the car he said "weird it feels a little slow".

Anyway after some investigation, he found the larger of the two intercoolers hoses wasnt connected at all! And never had been, judging by marks on the hose and what it conects to. And i had been driving it the whole time with only one turbo thinking it was crazy fast.

Thats weird...didn't you get any notice from the temperture of the car?? I mean that without an intercooler the temperture should be high to he sky.

This is a common thing upon Turbo'd car.

It's called a BOOST LEAK. The best way to test it out is to do a boost leak test..meaning you disconnect the intake, and pump air directly into the turbo outlets to a certain PSI or BAR and you wait and listen for any hissing sound.

If the leak is small enough, it won't make an audible noise from inside the car. I've had this happened to me about 3 times in the year of owning the Evo.

This is where a boost gauge would come in handy as well because if you have a boost leak, the boost amount will be less than normal.

I dont understand your approach to this. If you think you might have a turbo leak or that your car performance is not what you expect, why not try the dealer first. Have you taken it into the dealer and give them a chane to look at it?

Yes, its called a boost leak. This is where having a boost gauge comes in handy since you wouldn't be hitting full boost if you had a leak. Also, if you ever floor your car in any gear for the full RPM range then you would put the same abuse on the engine as a dyno, so there is really nothing to worry about. They will have your car on there for 2 or 3 pulls just to get #'s since you aren't tuning or anything. I wouldn't worry about it, I had my current car on the dyno for hours for tuning. I would invest in a boost gauge like a Defi, which also shows vac. They are accurate, and relatively cheap for around 90 bucks.

I will take it to Car dealer possibly tomorrow...I already contacted them but they initialy said "Impossible!! Do not be ridiculous" .
Then again I contacted them again saying that I want to sell the car cause i'm not happy...so they proposed me to do a diagnostic test (on tester possibly).
Would the Diagnostic tester mbe in position to check a boost leak or a power decrease ??

No way to know. It depends on how well the diagnostics were written. I doubt any of us know unless we're BMW certified techs...with experience on the 335i.

Look forward to hearing about your diagnostic results.

The problem is that there are very few 335i on my country (actualy my car was the first one imported) .
The problem is that the mechanics are not yet familiar with it...they were not sure even if they got to use the same or different oil than the standard engines.
