Clear coat stain on hood of car

After getting a car wash today, I noticed a stain on the hood of my car, a couple of inches above the BMW logo. It's hardly noticeable, the macro photo makes it look much worse than it actually is. On many other colors, you would probably not be able to see it, but you can definitely see it on a clean black hood. It's a little bit larger than a quarter. I tried to gently polish it away, but no avail. Does anybody know what I can do about this?

Unfortunately that looks like clear coat failure. Sometimes neglected bird poop does this.

i'm no expert but to me it looks like you'll have to repaint the hood to get rid of that

+1. The clear coat is definitely failing. My old JB e46 suffered from clear coat failure as well, and parts of the hood and roof looked identical to your picture. I believe the only solution is to repaint

As far as the dealer fixing it under warranty, I have no idea. But it wouldn't hurt to ask...

I looked at the stain again today... when the hood is only slightly dirty, you can barely see it... only on a clean hood it is noticeable. So if it stays like that, it wouldn't be too bad.

But if I understand the nature of clear coat failure correctly, it usually progresses outwards from this point and gets worse. Is this correct?

Gotta be from the bird poop. I have some stains as well, but they are just cloudy areas, non of the cracking that you are experiencing. For mine, I noticed that over time from a few washes and waxes, it will eventually disappear.

I don't think it's from bird poo, I always wipe that off immediately. Also, bird poop stains I think are more dull spots, not the cracking as seen on my car. I think either the previous owner did something to it (I bought it 2 years CPO used), or it is just a manufacturing defect, in which case I will try to convince BMW to take care of it.

UPDATE

I got BMW to repaint the hood and roof of the car under warranty. I noticed a couple more smaller spots of failing clear coat. First they said they will polish it out, but after that didn't work, they said the will refinish it to take care of it.

Kudos to BMW. Great service and they stand behind their products, highly recommended. Also many thanks to Tony Martins, the service manager of Open Road BMW in Edison, NJ, I can't commend him enough. I had a loaner for two weeks while they were taking care of it, no cost to me for anything.

Now I just hope it doesn't also happen to other parts of the car that have not been repainted.

Good to hear you got it covered! That should not happen on a relatively new car.
