Logic 7 speaker distortion

I am getting terrible distortion from the drivers side front speakers. I have narrowed it down to the small tweeter next to the side mirror area. It is pretty severe with volume anywhere from mid to high. I have the speakes on order to be replaced. The technician checked it out said everything sounds normal so I had to go back and point out where the distortion was coming from.

Anyone else with similar problems? Could it also be faulty wiring or defective amplifier? I'm so bummed out since the car isn't even a month old and I have never abused the sound system.

It must be a speaker defect. Blowing a speaker physically would take a lot of power. Or too much volume with an underpowered amp would do the trick too. Clipping is usually the culprit. I am sure it will be replaced under warranty, so no worries!

I have the same issue but only on AM. They have replaced the entire computer module for the car and the Logic 7 stereo amp and it is still doing it. Speakers are fine on Aux, CD, FM, Sat radio (even talk only) but AM? They filed a PUMA and are looking into it. . . . .

I have noticed this too a few times already. Not all the time, but a few. Usually, when I eject the CD and then re-insert or reboot the system, it goes away. I don't know what causes it, but you're not alone.

Can some of the people here with iDrive/Logic 7 take pic of their EQ screen?

I would like to see how you guys have it setup. I know some people do the V and I didn't get it to sound right so it's back at default now. Thanks

I use the V but no iDrive (a little harder to set up without the screen).

The EQ should be setup to suit the genre of music primarily played. If you are a classical fan, then you need to have it setup differently to those who like dance music etc.

I think we also need to allow for personal preferences as well. Some like booming bass while other like tight bass.

I suppose that's why the EQ allows for a generous range of adjustments over a reasonable frequency response range.

Then we have a couple of reverb presets to choose from - or not.

The setup can take some time to get it just right.

Have fun!!!

The CD that distorted the speakers was Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me" track #2. Since this morning, I have tested numerous CDs. It turns out that it's only the Norah Jones CD that causes the problem. I am beginning to think that the CD is to blame, not the speaker system. If anyone else has Norah Jones CD, please test track #2 with volume near max and listen to the tweeter of the driver's side front door. Please let me know if you get distortion or not. I was basically hearing distorted buzzing sound. Thanks!

Update on 10/07/2005
I have tried many different CDs as well as other sources. I'm convinced the speakers are defective. I noticed navigation voice, cell phone over bluetooth as well as iPod via Aux can cause severe distortion from the driver's side front speakers. I'll have them replaced next weekend. I hope that fixes the problem...

Hi Bertuzzi (fellow Chicagoan!),

Just this week I picked up my Euro Delivered 330i and noticed that I too have distortion coming from the driver's side front speaker, when I listen to a CD or AM radio. The CD I was listening to was not Norah Jones... My EQ and tone settings are flat. Can't tell if it is the door speaker or the tweeter.

When I picked up the car in Munich, I noticed that the tone settings (bass and treble) were all maxed out. I wonder if this might have caused the speaker to "blow?"

Annoying... time to call service (already).

Glad to see another Chicagoan! I took my car to Patrick BMW in Schaumburg, IL. The technicians there were definately not audiophiles as they had no idea what I was complaining about. I finally convinced the technician that the sound is "not right". The buzzing distortion is just so annoying, I couldn't believe they didn't hear it right away.

They ordered two loudspeakers. I am 99% sure it is the small tweeter next to the side mirror, but they will be replacing both speakers on the driver's side front door. I'll let you guys know how it goes. The parts will arrive next week, and I'll probably have them replaced by end of next week.

This may be a different problem, but occasionally I get distortion while playing a CD. Though this is more of a digitalized sound to the music being played. If I change to the radio and back to the CD it goes away.

I have noticed that if a cell phone call gets dropped, its more likely to give me this "digitalized" sound when the music resumes.

Anyone else have this problem? When I get a chance I will have the dealer look at it.

Michael

I am getting the same problem with a 2006 330i. Did the problem go away after tweeter replacement?

Old thread.

If you are getting distortion from one of your tweeters it is most likely blown. The tweeter and door speaker are powered by the same channel on the amp so it's not likely that the amp is the problem if only the tweeter is distorting.

You might be able to find one in the for sale section.

Replace all the speakers 4 of em, 4 inch speakers.
2 in door, 2 in rear side panels with 4 inch : 3 way speakers.
Do not plug or attach the front door tweeters to the new aftermarket speakers.
The factory speakers are melting at the magnet.

Is this a comment or a question?
And it seems you have modified things did you do a
power calculation and match your new speakers to the power
rating on whatever amplifier you used?

This comment has no data on what you did to modify things what kind
of speakers you used what the power rating is etc etc...

Why dig up and old thread you might as well start a new one.
