Maximum heart rate
When I am mountain biking the maximum I can get my heart rate up to is 183 bpm. My age is 41.
My brother who is 1 year younger gets his heart rate up to 195. What does this mean in terms of fitness? |

Generally speaking, the higher the heart rate, the less efficiently it is working.

But like anything every two people are different. Can perform to the same level but heart rate may differ etc

on a serious note, I think how quickly it returns to say 100 is a more accurate indicator of fitness |

The equipment at the gym will do an emergency stop at 180bpm. Had this once on a cross trainer when it wrongly thought my hear rate was this high. Seriously, I thought anything above 180 was really bad for you?

Very fit individuals have (in the absence of medication) a low resting heart rate and a rapid return to baseline after exercise.

When I was 18 or 19, I got well over 210 while absolutely tearing my legs to pieces on an exercise bike. It looked messy and quite funny when going that hard, but I didn't feel very well afterwards. After coming off the bike, I couldn't continue with any other exercises or even think properly, I could only stand around leaning on some of the machines and breathing quite heavily. It was like an out-of-body experience, I was there but not really 'there', and I always remember the lady who never spoke to anyone, asking "Are you okay?" - I think that was a good sign not to try that again...
Nowadays, I don't push over 160-170 in the gym while doing cardio workouts, the maximum I've had in recent years is 186 How reliable are those pulse reader things anyway? |

Thanks for the comments guys, I did feel dizzy and a bit out of it when my heart was at 183 bpm, their was no way it was going any higher.
Think it's right that the sign of fitness is how quickly your pulse returns to the resting rate. |

You should stay below 180 mate. 195 is far too high. Tell him to take it slightly easier.
If you are of similar age and both doing the same exertion then it is pretty clear that you are fitter than he is.
