try to find a broker to do it for you.
he will outline all of the issues beforehand and you will know the costs up front before signing anything. the more expensive the car is, the more doing this makes sense. especially for a new bmw. http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/SafeV.../list2/BMW.htm looks like major work, but it is not. keep us updated! |

if nobody on here knows, ask at a canadian tire near a border town. or call. they have an agreement with canada to do the inspection after the "modifications" to approve for vehicle registration.
everything i needed to know, i found out through a mechanic working at a canadian tire. i think they just want to see DRL active and a sticker stating the odometer is in miles |

You best discuss it with a bmw dealer; it seems to change every few months.
When I imported my 06 530i they did not replace the heater controls, or the cluster. This has caused some grief because indeed the cars computer is in these two units. I have resisted and lived with the problems. Sometime after in 2008 BMW insisted that these components be changed in the e60s. I am not too sure what is needed in the e90. I believe there are some importers that get you around this and gets a recall letter by some other means. This gets you around BMW crap, but I don't think your warranty will be valid. |

I just imported a 2010 335xi. It cleared the RIV no problem and I used a Vehicle Warranty Inquiry from the dealer in the US to get recall clearance. I am now in talks with BMW to see what I have to do to meet compliance and from what I hear its a 1600 Cluster + Daytime Running Lights reprogramming. Once I find out for sure I will make a post to help other people on the forum out who are thinking about importing. It is really not a complicated process at all.
Asides from HST + 6% Duty you will have to pay for Canadian Tire inspections ($141.24), RIV fees ($220.35), and $20 for temp plates in the US. This is including taxes. |

importing
hey man im in toronto and i boughta 328xi from the states.
All i needed was recall letter from a BMW dealership stating there no open campaigns on the car. THis letter can cost $500-700, but the person your buying it from can usually get it for you. The private dealer i bought it from got it for free to me. we got that to the RIV. There is nothing that has to be done to the car to bring it in to Canada like changing heater controls are any of that. I know people say you have to change this n that, but this just to bring it up to BMW standards and not for importing according to RIV. THE RIV will only require DRL (which are already equipped) and the cluster must have KM's which they all do. Lastly they themeselves will change the units from miles to KMS and voila, that all you are all clear. I called RIV and they said we dont care what BMW wants done to the car, i was told by BMW to change the cluster to a Canadian one for my e92, but thats all BS. These are just preventive controls put in place by bmw to keep the business in Canada. And i had full factory warranty on my car even though my car was not accoring to BMW specs after the import. They have done at least over $10,000 worth of work on my car under warranty including engine mounts, valvle lifters, and head cylinder without any issues. The shop foreman actually applauded me that i got the car in without modifying it, and got the recall letter from bmw. Never tell them what American BMW dealer got you the recall letter because they will contact them and will ensure no recall letters go out, frig all them Canadian BMW dealers overpricing their veihicles.
