Wheel Bearing Replacement
Hi!
One of my wheel bearings needs replacement. The stealership quoted me over $400 for the bearing alone (part # BM31-21-6-765-157). Problem is that if you look at the following website (one of many I found), you can buy the same bearing for significantly less money: Approx $125.00 My dealership told me to be careful if I had it installed somewhere else as they might screw something up IE: ABS system etc... Thoughts? I wonder if I bought the part if they would install it for me... Thanks! - Martin. |

I do not think it is an incredibly complex operation. I would have it done at a reputable independent shop if you are out of warranty. The dealership will charge you 2-3x for the same quality work.

Most dealers will not install ANYTHING that you did not buy from them.
I would either do it myself or have an Indy repair facility do this Also there are ony a few bearing manufacturers so see if you can found out who made the cheaper one and if it is Chinese do not buy it. The cheapest price is not always the best price |

You don't need to go to the dealer for this repair. Any decent mechanic can make this repair and a BMW independent would be the best choice. The procedure can't be more than an hour book rate.
Attached is the BMW TIS front wheel bearing replacement procedure. It's pretty straight forward. I really don't think you necessarily need to replace the mounting bolts, but instead just use some new threadlock on them. But the bolts are not that expensive anyway. I doubt you could get an aftermarket part for the bearing anyway because it comes as an assembly with a new hub flange (that the wheel mounts to). Tischer sells the part for $217. Keep in mind that the repair shop sells it for a higher price because he is providing a warranty with the part. The bolts are $3.00 each. So a good estimate is $250 for the parts and $100 for labor. Good luck. Last edited by ENINTY; 04-16-2011 at 08:18 AM.. |

My 06 E90 started making front wheel bearing noise this summer. Unfortunitely it's coming from both sides. I have a nephew that owns a small auto repair shop specializing in Hondas. He put my on to this online parts supplier of OEM auto parts. We checked and sure enough they carried the OEM front wheel hubs for my E90.They are listed as part number 31216765157 (just like BMW) and the manufactured is ***.
Their price is $125.00 Canadian and they do not provide the four attachment bolts (which MUST BE REPLACED). The bolt (unfortunately) are specialty items supplied only by BMW. The bolts are a high grade bolt completely coated with a special aluminum oxide treatment (to prevent corrosion) and have red thread lock compound on the threads (to help prevent then coming loose). The bolts on installation are torqued to 110 Nm which is just about the max. torque for that grade of bolt. On removal, it is possible to brake the bolt head right off (which has been done). This is why they recommend that the bolts be replaced. |
