iPhone 4 Cradle Recall/Mistake?
I ordered the iPhone 4 snap-in adapter 84212199390 for pre-9/2010 E90. It actually shipped, but then the dealer informed me there was a "part number succession error" and that the shipped unit would not actually work on my car, and asked that I refuse/return it, which I did.
Does anyone know the technical details of this issue? I read a story where someone got an iPhone 4 unit and the instructions inside were all wrong for 3G/3GS, but it did work. I hope this is not some silly packaging error that resulted in the recall of all the inventory. Now there are apparently new/undisclosed part numbers for the US and these units have not shipped from BMW Germany thus far. |

So as best as I can imagine, BMW released 84212199390, discovered a flaw, and has immediately recalled them and EOL'd the part number. The other possibility is they inadvertently filled *90 orders with *89, and the dealer realized *89 won't work, and recalled the orders. |

I received more detail to explain this. BMW made an error in their system and marked a particular adapter as applying to supercede certain existing part numbers. Dealers ordered these to fill pending orders. It turned out the adapters were not compatible for those uses/vehicles so the orders had to be cancelled/recalled.
So we wait for the proper parts to be shipped by BMW, for Music and Media. As implied in a link above, the *90 and *92 part numbers appear to have been for the european market, have been withdrawn, and it appears new part numbers will be forthcoming. I am guessing as usual that euro vehicles are ahead of the US, and their adapters may rely on features not necessarily in the US vehicles. |

Another question for anyone who might have the parts or ability to test.
The iPhone 4/Music adapter is for cars up to 9/2010 with 6NF. The iPhone 4/Media adapter is for cars 9/2010 and forward (Combox), with 6NF or 6NR. Despite the specific compatibility mentioned, would the Media adapter work at all in the pre-9/2010 car? Is the system completely different with 6NF in the Combox car? It would be nice to know, as I'd prefer to buy the Media version in case I retrofit the Combox later, or get a newer car that has it, and don't need to buy the adapter again. |

Returned the Media Adapter
I have a pre-9/2010 5-Series (2011). Bought the Media adapter per (wrong) dealer instructions. It worked for phone and charging, but not music. Returned it and am now waiting for the Music adapter to release. Hope it comes out before the iPhone 8.

Given all this hullaballoo, I am thinking that I should get the phone-only cradle (to get the inductive shark-fin antenna extension thingie) and retrofit a cable into it to connect it to the existing iPod interface. This is NOT hard to diagram out. The old pice needed USB + Audio, the newer ones just need USB, and those are not compatible without some rewiring, which is what I'm getting ready to do...
