550i with 6 speed

I am considering 550i with 6 speed. It looks like the fuel consumption is quite a bit more compared to the automatic. I am wondering what is real world mpg is like. I was also wondering how the highway cruising is like. The 6th gear seems to have the same ratio as my 328, which means 2k+ rpm cruise on highway. Any input/info is appreciated.

Thanks!

i have a regular f10 550i in 6spd man. And my real world average is 15.2 on the highway the average is 22.5. It is 10 times more fun than the basic automatic. Also these number are good considering that I have a stage 2 Dinan software on the car. It all comes down to wether you are stuck in traffic a lot or not. I don't deal with much traffic so i have a lot fun driving. Its a real breeze to drive and he clutch is perfect.

If you have anymore specific questions, drop me a pm at any time !

I have the 6MT on the 535i with no engine tune. My overall average is 20.1 mpg. Highway I get about 29-31 mpg. I'm surprised the 550i is that much lower. 70mph cruise on the highway is a little over 2K rpms for me. Around 2200-2400 or so. I bet someone can do the math and come up with the theoretical answer.

I have a 550i 6MT. i get about 14/22 (just me in car) it all comes down to how aggressive you drive. on a full tank average i get 270 miles. When i filled it back up it took 16.4 gal. But I went into the city and drove about 25 miles of stop & go and had 3 ppl in my car, I got 9mpg. When i rev each gear to 3k rpm or higher it really affects mpg. if you shift at 1800-2000 rpm you get better mpg. but of course its much more fun when you rev it 3k+ per gear. Honestly the only difference is about one more tank ($75) per month when I drive aggressive than when I drive passive. I usually fill up every 6 days when I drive regular/passive but when I drive aggressive 3-4 days. But this shouldn't even be a debate. 6MT ALL THE WAY!

You can see how fast efficient dynamics is developing to deliver power with better fuel economy. The new M5 is supposed to get close to your mileage in the city and better on the highway. All that with 100+ more HP. Pretty amazing

If gas mileage is something that worries you then buy the 535 with a manual because the 550 is a gas hog. Around town my mileage is terrible but on the Hwy I get a consistent 20 to 22 mpg at 45-55 mpg average speed showing on the computer. I do about 65/35 town/highway and my average is around 16.5 mpg.

My wife's 2010 VW JSW TDI (diesel) gave us an average of 41.2 mpg on a 2,200 mile trip to Utah this week

I am trying to decide whether I should get auto or 6 speed. Auto trans seems to get pretty nice MPG for a big engine and big weight car. Although I prefer 6 speed I also do care about my mpg

I doubt there's going to be a huge difference in mileage between the 8AT and 6MT if that's the only variable you're changing. I'd be surprised if the difference were more than 10%. And with the numbers we're talking, that's the difference between 14mpg and 15mpg. If you want the 6MT, go for it!
