Screw in sidewall
I noticed this morning that my rear passenger tire (OEM RFT) has a screw in it. Entry point was right about where the tread meets the sidewall, and it's pointed vertically. It went in about 1/4" inch and is very shallow horizontally (the rubber has clearly taken the shape of the threads in the screw, so it's not deep into the sidewall, maybe a couple of mm). Do you think this will need to be replaced? I bought my car about a year ago and it had nearly new RFTs, I've put about 10k miles on since.
I plan to take the car to a tire place either way, but I wanted to make sure I went in there after hearing some opinions. |

It's a little hard to say without photos. I'd take it to a reputable tire shop to see if they think that it's usable.

I took the car to America's Tire and they said it didn't need to be replaced. According to them, the sidewall on a RFT is 1/4" thick, and the screw was so close to the surface (the manager was able to wiggle the screw out with his bare hands) that it didn't affect the structure of the tire. On a regular tire, it would've needed replacement. I guess the RFTs are good for something after all.
