ED - driving over 1200mi
I have read that the break-in service kicks in at 1200 miles. If I wanted to drive about 2000-2500 miles for ED, is it advisable to get the car serviced along the way? Or would it be ok to service it after dropoff? Anyone had any experience with this?

I think you just need to take it easy with the car for the first 1200mi...first service shouldn't be for a while. (just dont go over 4.5k rpms) till 1000mi.
I usually own break in for about 300-400 miles than have fun, never had a problem, plus you have warranty(if you are planning on keep the car a long time you might want to follow bmw break in protocols. Maybe after ED, when you return the car to Germany for shipping, maybe they car chance the oil.

It's probably not an issue -- but why take a chance on BMW NA turning down a warranty claim later on b/c you were late on a service?
We did about 2200 miles a couple of summers ago (2010) on our M3 ED -- at a little over 1200 miles we swung by a dealer in Bolzano and they were able to do the service in about 2.5 hours (we went out and grabbed lunch, and when we came back, the car was ready). We had to pay for the service (around 400 Euros, I believe), but our sales contact submitted a claim to BMW NA and we were reimbursed for the charges. |

Did the M3 have a scheduled service at 1200mi?
AFAIK, non of the non-M cars do anymore, so I do not think there should be any warranty issue. I know there was none for my ED and that was 9 years ago. |

yeah -- there was a scheduled service at 1200 miles.
If the non-M cars don't have that required service, then I agree with what the others here have written in that you probably don't need to worry about it (just take it easy) -- especially in light of the fact that BMW NA would almost certainly not reimburse you for the expensive service performed in Europe. |

To the OP, aren't you doing an ED?
Why dont you ask the dealership on those technicalities and confirm with us on what to do or how to break the car in? It would be to your benefits to know the planning of your ED itinerary ... PS: i would be interested too since i am also going for an ED |
