New Record at Nurburgring Nordschleife - 5:57

Has anyone seen this article on RoadandTrack.com. It talks about Nick Heidfeld breaking the 24 year old record of running the Ring in the BMW-Sauber F1.06 car.
See link: http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....rticle_id=5293

BMW denied they were going for a record however independent timers recorded the 5:57 time and they say they could have beat that time but were limited by the gear ratios which held the car to 170mph in the straits.

Stefan Bellof's stunning 6:11.13 with a Porsche 956? This guy sure knows how to drive. However, the 956 is not the ordinary Porsche, but again, it was years ago. They are both impressive numbers.

Interesting if this is true...but sounds like it hasn't been confirmed other than by way of "independent sources".

8min 3#something seconds, did he stop and get coffee or take a leak somewhere?

There are guys on my Evo forum that have broken into the 8 minute lap segment there and I'm pretty sure even a half-assed setup F1 car should annihilate a pretty well sorted Evo.

I don't understand why they wouldn't want to officially time it though.

Yeah the 8 minute time was him going very slowly...from what I heard he was told not to floor the car and coast along several camera/chase cars for photo opportunities...as BMW did not want to trash their car and did not want their driver to be injured.

I did not hear BMW ever trying to do a fast lap...that's why I'm surprised to hear that these "sources" say that they broke the 6 minute mark...
