Is the Oil Level Reading Progressive?

I check my oil level regularly through the on board computer. It was sitting at 3/4 for quite some time and then it went to half for a long time. Today I checked and it was between MIN and half.

Does the readout only show you in blocks of percentage meaning 100%, 75%, 50%, 25% etc or can it show anything inbetween in smaller percentage readings?

I ask because I think it's strange that it goes from 3/4 to 1/2 pretty quickly. I don't have any oil drippings on my garage floor so I'm guessing the car is using a little bit of oil (is this normal?) but the reading won't drop little by little.

I am losing about 1/4 quart of oil every 3K miles through a leak. The belly pan is catching the oil; I don't see any drips on the ground unless the car is stopped on a steep hill. I thought my car was "burning" oil too, until I dropped the belly pan.

Did your oil reading drop in big chunks or did you see it slowly drop?

The readout sounds like it is working correctly. The readout is showing the status of the 7th quart of oil in the engine sump. It only indicates the status of the 7th quart in 1/4 (25%) increments. When the reading shows "+1 Qt" then it is time to add an additional quart of oil.

If you are concerned about the engine's oil consumption, write down the level reading and corresponding mileage it was read at. Record the data for awhile then you can analyze the trend of oil consumption.

Thanks, makes sense. I wasn't so worried about the fact of it dropping quickly just dropping in big chunks.

Check your oil cooler flange gasket. It is know to deteriorate from heat and cause oil leaks.

^^^Actually, it turns out I have two leaks. I thought I just had one - which I fixed by replacing the gasket that mates the oil cooler thermostat housing to the oil filter housing. Surprise! Somewhere there is a another leaker which I need to get around to tracing down.

^^ This, exactly. Not only did they eliminate the easy way to check your oil, but they dumbed-down the level indicator to further obfuscate the whole issue.
