Wastegate rattle occurs only when you release the gas pedal at 3k+ rpm, and you hear a tin can rattling sound. The sound is a by product of the exhaust gas exitting from the wastegate, a metallic flap that is usually held closed by a rod. When you decellerate the rod pulls back the metallic flap to let the exhaust gas escape. The metallic flap is slightly loose from the factory and almost every N54 has wastegate rattle and it is NOT an indicator of failing turbos.
That "tshick tshick" sound during idle is the fuel injectors. My car also has that sound. |

Thank you guys! So if it is not indicator of failing turbos, then what it indicates? Is it just sound and it doesn't affect any performance or reliability for long term? |

Shouldnt have any issues...I have wastegate rattle too but honestly its not as bad as some of the videos on youtube...so I'm hoping mine doesnt get worse.. If your under warranty you should take it in and try to get them to reduce/get rid of the noise...wont cost you a dime!

If you are referring to the ticking noise, then it is normal. As far as I can tell from the crappy laptop speakers, this is the sound of the injectors on a DI motor. Nothing to worry about!
