Question to the California 335i owners....
From what I've seen [and experienced] in the past, the state of California has the most stringent emission control in North America in general.
Those who have the catless downpipes installed and keep the OEM secondary cats, did you pass the emission test there? Thank You |

Yeah, if it was every year, I would just suck it up and swap them myself, but every two years I get more than $400 of enjoyment out of them so spending the money to swap them out is worth it for me. I do remember the smog tech saying that CA might go to a simple OBD2 scan which I was quite surprised to hear! If that was the case, a BMS DP fix would be all you'd need.

Do those fault codes show up even with "a certain downpipe fix"?
I guess the consensus here is NO to go catless downpipes. I thought I saw someone here from California who had catless downpipes and passed the e-test. |

If you have the BMS DP fix, you could pass the OBD test, but if they do a visual inspection and see your missing 2 cats you'll fail. You might be able to pass the sniffer test with just your secondary cats, Ive heard of people running a high blend of e-85 to help them pass before.

how often and when do you have to get smogged? I just got my DP's a few months ago, and there is no way mine would pass based on the smoke alone

I had a not so pleasant experience with the backwood shop.
The next question will be: Do the OEM secondary cats have the same CEL density as those of the leading high flow catted downpipes such as UR Racing, AR design, etc....? Thank You |

Forgive my ignorance on the subject as I'm still in a 328, however is the difference in power between catted and catless DPS really that different? I feel you would be better off getting catted DPs for a few hundred extra, as opposed to having to uninstall/reinstall every 2 years, after doing that a few times the money seems to outweigh the HP added.
I know NJ is a bit luckier as they do OBD scans. |

I went down the high flow catted dowpipe path before.
After a 2 year usage, the cats started to "dislocate" and made rattle noises that amplified the wastegate rattles. Yes, I passed the emission test with the high flow catted downpipes and NO secondary cats. That is why I reiterate the question: Do the OEM secondary cats have the same CEL density as those of the leading high flow catted downpipes such as UR Racing, AR design, etc....? Thank You Quote:

You have to smog 6 years after manufacter year and then every 2 years.
If someone can post pics of the 2nd cats, you can ball park it by the looks. I would guess they are the same density. OEM only cares about blowing clean air, not horsepower. |

the cats from an aftermarket DP are HFC's and are shorter than the stock secondaries. So I would venture to guess that the stock secondaries would more dense than the catted aftermarket dp.
