I have a 2007 E92 335i 6MT with ~45k miles on the clock (75000km). It is doing this also, although not nearly as bad. Been searching through the internet for solutions but haven't found anything. All I've been able to find is that it's considered normal on these cars to have a rough idle, but I'm not sure mine is normal since my dad's 520d idles much more smoothly than my 335i. It shouldn't be that rough, should it? Do you feel the car stutter through the seat? The car also shakes sideways. Mine does it and sometimes it's so violent that the passenger notices it too. My sister was in the car with me and she said it felt like I was holding the clutch at the "grab point" (don't know what it's called in english, sorry) when I asked her did she feel that. Do you have an automatic or a manual? It feels almost like the car dies for a second and then comes back to life and although the RPMs stay the same, these are the "pauses" in the exhaust. Now that it's cold and you can see the exhaust fumes, it almost seems that the exhaust is "blocked" some how for a brief moment and then a puff of smoke comes out and the idle stays normal for a bit and then it does it again. But it seems that you have an aftermarket exhaust? So I'm not sure that the exhaust is the problem. I'm hesitant to take it to a dealer since if they consider it normal, I'm shit out of luck and about a days labor + all extra fees (warranty here in Finland is a bit different than in the States). Though if they find something, they'll cover the costs. Also my HPFP hasn't been replaced, at least as far as I know. One thing I've noticed that the "golf tee mod" made it slightly better, really don't know why. I also had a very small leak in the X-pipe's weld which was fixed and the car ran perfectly smooth for that day, but when I shut it off and drove it the next day it was business as usual. Maybe it has something to do with the oxygen sensors? I really am keen to resolve this issue so please share everything you find about this! Thanks and best of luck getting it fixed

I've had this exact problem for the last 18 months... Many are suffering with the same shivers and shakes at idle that cause idle to rise up from 600rpm (normal) to 750 as if to try to compensate and balance the missfires out. The idle is rough as he'll but never throws codes or misfires on boost.

Have a look at the below link, you will see what I've had replaced to try to combat this with no success at all... At a loss now myself!! BMW need to sort this out, if it was normal it would be happening to everyone so that bs!!

I'm our of warranty now so you guys with warranty need to keep on at you local dealer until they find it n dont take there usual 'it's normal' crap

I've actually read your thread a few months ago, but I see there is some new posts. It was an "interesting" read, if you could say so. Not really a confidence-inspiring writeup that this could be solved easily I also forgot to mention that my car also does that RPM switch sometimes, but not always. It rises the idle RPM in some futile attempt to compensate for the issue. I've tried holding the RPMs at 1500+ with a little throttle at a standstill and it doesn't have any effect on the issue as far as I can tell. Also had my plugs changed a few thousand kilometres ago and it didn't have any effect either.

I have noticed a better idle and fewer "bumps" at idle and 2000RPM light load when running Shell gasoline versus others - Exxon, Sunoco, and other brands. I don't know what could be causing your severe problem, but maybe try different gas to see whether that helps? Maybe your gas station has old contaminated tanks?

Do you have a video of the tach? I couldn't figure out much in the video. These cars rough pretty idle in general.

Video looks normal to me too. And yes, these cars do have idle hiccups from time to time..vary with the weather, etc. Like someone said, try a different gas. I try to stick with shell and 76 in a pinch. Mobil hasn't been too kind to my car

my car also shakes a bit and RPM hunts during cold starts. when i try to drive, 1st gear is really jerky on acceleration after engagement... no lights or codes but last time i went in to fix something with a solenoid, the SA mentioned a pinched turbo vacuum line but he said it should be fine for now. maybe that might be it? i don't know much about this so i could be completely wrong...

Perhaps its a vac/boost leak?

Replace all the vac lines. They are inexpensive and at that mileage they could easily be the culprit. Especially the ones nearest the solenoids/turbo's and under engine cover.

These cars really dont idle to smooth to begin with especially as the temps drop.

based on the symptoms now, versus what it was doing before... I'd have to agree that this is probably the case. when the car is not idling, its beast mode all day long.

No boost issues, only at vacuum.

you can try to replace vac lines 5-6 first. very cheap and easy to do yourself.

I have tried everying to solve this issue, complete sets of plugs, injectors, coils full head off and complete decarb, low pressure fuel sensor, both vanos solanoids.

New vac lines might be the answer, keep us posted!!

Dont go chasing your tail too long, your idle appears to be "normal" for this platform.
