drove my buddys 2008 m5 today
So i finally got to drive my friends 08 m5. Its such a sick car, i love it.
however i dont think i could buy one after driving it. The power band is annoying, it makes no power until like 5500 rpm but after that its like a rocket ship. The sound of that engine is awesome, getting on that thing onto the highway made me think i was on top gear or something. Truley amazing It makes me really enjoy the linear power of the 335i, even at 2500rpm the power is brutal in the N54 with my mods. I did a few pulls in the M5 up to about 120 and its impressive for sure in the higher RPM range and over 100 mph, but before that its very slugish IMHO And on top of that the 10.8 MPG I was getting is a joke, i always get about 24mpg in my car. So all in all the M5 is a sick car but i dont think i would enjoy the power that it has compared to the N54 i have now and the MPG would just piss me off. We played a little bit up to about 120 and my E90 and the E60 M5 were dead even for the most part. it was a fun day, needed some pics

That's a pretty fair assessment... The top end on the M5 is crazy though, above 120 it will be very tough for you but at the same time; who actually drives that fast day to day. The power band of that car can't truly be exploited on the streets and the cars weight and bulkiness is very annoying... so all in all, I agree with you.

We both agreed that the M5 feels like it has a turbo charger cause it almost feels like turbo lag until 5500rpm and the N54 feels like a NA straight 6 thats built cause the power comes on so fast and its so smooth all the way to 6000 rpm

The power band of the N54 is what will make me keep this car for a long time. There is no other car for the money and the few mods needed to bring it to a level it is now. I love iT!

I totally understand what you mean and fully agree. A friend of mine is overseas and asked me to get his eisenmann race exhaust and x pipe installed for him. I loved driving it and it sounded like it dropped down from heaven with the exhaust, but it felt slower than my car around town. I know we have little or no chance in the upper numbers, but in my daily driving range, I prefer driving my JB4'ed n54. The car definitely sounded AMAZING though. I would surely need a daily driver if I owned one since I was getting 11.8 mpg average for the time I had it. I was happy to see 22mpg in my car when I got back in it. lol Great car though.

ya i was really kinda bummed out with driving the M5 after all the hype talking the M5 up i thought it was just going to be like blistering fast at all RPMs
if you just stab the M5 going 40mph in 2nd gear its a joke until you get to the power band at 5500rpm. The gearing is nice 3rd gear pulls are fucking insane but around here you never have a chance to get over 120ish safely so whats the point of having a car that hauls ass from 110-160? if you cant use it where as the 335i 0-120 is amazing and you can use it all the time safely and not worry about dying

ya my car is FBO+meth, No nos.
Even with a bad clutch the M5 was not gaining on me at all up to 120, i think if i had a clutch i would beat it up to 120ish However i wish i could install the m5 seats in my car they are so soft and comfy, holy shit i love those seats. My seats feel like shit after driving that car

I test drove a 2006 M5 with SMG and felt the exact same way. I'm a bit shy to admit that around here because all the M fanboys always flip out when they hear you don't think an M product is 100% flawless in every way.
On the other hand, I wasn't totally impressed with the sound of the V10 either. It sounded great when at redline but sounded just okay to me elsewhere in the power band. To me, the inline 6 may not sound as good up top but sounds pretty good all the way from idle to redline. At the end of the day I felt the car suffered the same problem as most M cars: it would be the perfect car if it weren't so damn heavy. |

Seriously though, i can't believe BMW couldn't figure out that heavy car with a small, low torque engine doesn't really work. The S85 in a 1er is what the 1M should've been. I love my car with the N54, but THAT would've been the greatest car ever made. |

There wont be another N54 engine of its kind for a while...Everything hereafter will be garbage..Even though the N54 has its faults aka HPFP, water pumps etc, it will be one of the most sort after motors for years to come

The N54's strength is in the aftermarket, whereas the S85 is a beast out of the box. But, like i said i agree with you how special the potential of the N54 is. One of these days, there will be a single turbo and the 2JZ/RB26DETT will have to step aside as the top dog I6. |

I can't imagine how weird that would be... extreme weight imbalance and an incredibly small front engine V10 car... the 1M is perfect as it is, the M3 should have gotten a stronger turbo engine than the N54... BMW shot themselves in the foot on that one but it won't happen again. As great as the S65 in the M3 is, I think they realized very quickly that they should probably make an engine with less potential (n55) in the 335i if they don't want to cannibalize sales even further.

it could work, they may have to do a lot of engineering/balancing of the suspension, but they should have no problem making that work. |
