Big Brother is watching

Yet another example of Orwell's foresight; 1984 is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16969509

So every time you go 71 on the motorway or have any fun an a back road you premium goes up a bit.

Sounds great! Where do I sign up!

Don't some insurers already insist on this sort of thing for new drivers?

Exactly; for quite some time I've been wondering when the DoT would make something like this mandatory for all vehicles and not just for insurance purposes either; looks like it's not too far off

Would this unit need be hard wired into the ECU then?

If not then why not stick on your push bike instead

I don't think the insurance company version would be hard wired and as to removing it; I very much imagine they've already figured that one out

Bloody hell. Just last week I was saying on your other post Jon that it's only a matter of time before cars have some kind of black box so the insurance companies can screw us even harder.

Yes, but it wouldn't take long for some bright spark to 'cheat the system'

I certainly hope so, but I imagine there'd be heavy penalties if you were caught.

Obviously none of us would entertain the idea of these gadgets in our cars...

...but...

...I've just had a similar system fitted into a couple of our vans and now they're driving like Miss Daisy, they're parked up when and where they're supposed to be and our insurance premium is due to come down a touch. I've even been a bit sneaky, the rest of the fleet think I've had real time tracking added to their vehicles too so everyone is playing nicely.

That is very sneaky rich. Is respect not one of the values in your company?

A guy in work (who owns a shit box that breaks down regularly) was telling me that all the AA rescue vehicles have something similar fitted. If the data shows that they haven't been driving in the most economical manner then they get their baws kicked.

It could be the death of the white van man. I'm sure we've all been chased at high speed by a Vito at some point.

Hmmm... How can I answer that without sounding like someone that runs some sort of 19th century workhouse? I can't. So I won't!

The whole scheme is pathetic, full of holes; and of no interest to anyone who enjoys driving. That said. Question.

How will they account for track days and such?

It will be a sad day if this ever goes ahead.

Most emergency service vehicles have had them a while now, righty so.

That's probably one of the factors they considered when implementing the system - mainstream insurance companies don't like track days.

I quite agree, but it looks like it's going ahead. The saddest day will be when all insurance companies adopt it - not to mention the DoT, and probably the EU, making it compulsory on all new vehicles.
