Working in the industry I wouldn't imagine ofcom would allow EE to do this. EE have to auction off some of their 1800 MHz spectrum which will be tied into the 4G auctions later this year (2.6 ghz and 800 MHz).

All operators are trailing 4G in certain areas at the moment. However, until the auction, the best they can do with 3G is HSPA or HSDPA+ and they are achieving some half decent speeds. This is completely focused on urban centres.

I work in mobile comms infrastructure and no operator is planning on rolling out 4G or LTE for a while yet.
We're still building 2G sites.

Do either of you know what's happening with o2s 900mhz 3G?

They shouted about it ages ago but I've still yet to find a mast that is running it. I could do with a signal boost where I live.

And when they do bring in 4g I hope they up the data allowance too!

I can't remember where i read this, but i'll try and find out and post later.

Remember the debacle when Channel 5 TV was introduced with co-channel interference and filters having to be fitted on video recorders etc.

Guess what!
4G uses the same band as Digital Terestial TV.
The government have effectively sold the same frequency band twice!
So there'll be another debacle of filters being fitted to DT TV's when 4G is introduced.

Apparently, in some places, even filters won't work!

Yes it started being rolled out back end of last year and will continue through this year with a massive push on it from o2.
As you probably know its basically 3G over 2G.
What town are you based in and I'll see if I can find out for you.

A bit more information here suggests, we'll get no where near what the spec is capable of.... as usual.

http://searchmobilecomputing.techtar.../definition/4G

It's a sales gimmick.

Will do! I usually only bump into him at either Edinburgh airport or Heathrow as we both do a fair bit of travelling!
