Where to add a Bass Gain knob???

Hey All,

So I am going to be installing a small sub in my trunk this weekend. I have a Rockford Fosgate amp with a gain knob. In most of my cars I have put the knob under the front of the seat. Out of site but still accessible.

I am having trouble finding a good spot for it in the coupe... Any suggestions or pics of installs?

why do you want to install an extra device? Since you can control the bass on the CD player itself.

I didnt install my bass gain knob simply because i did not want to drill holes in my car + it would a huge pain in the ass to route the wire from the trunk to a suitable location. What i did was use a multimeter to perfectly set the gains on the amp and now i just use the bass adjustment on the cd player to adjust the bass. Hopefully this helps

The OP is talking about a LOT more sound and bass than the stock stereo will deliver.

Thank you! Yes I want more bass. But the more important reason is that I want to not have to crank the bass on the stock speakers. The additional sub will also hit much lower freq than the stock subs.

I want the gain knob so I can really crank the bass when I want but mute the additional sub when needed.

I agree that I dont want to drill holes, although this is how I have done it in all my other cars. But I dont really want to drill this one, although, was I thinking of putting it, you would never see the hole after.

I was thinking of mounting it from behind the plastic panel that is under the thigh support that extends. But when I felt that piece from behind it feels like there are two pieces of plastic about 1/4in apart. So I dont know how I would mount it.

The other way I was thinking is to just create an L shaped bracket out of plexi. Stick it down there with double sided tape.

PS: I know my descriptions are worthless with out pics... But I am really trying to get some of your opinions on where you would put it...

I added 2 10" sub and 420w MTX in the back. but I don't see the need to install this remote because whenever I want more bass, I just adjust that on the CD player. Normally, I set medium on the CD player, and can add/remove bass on the fly.

Ok, Ill try to explain it again...

I WANT TO BE ABLE TO ADJUST MY ADDED SUB SEPARATELY AND LEAVE THE STOCK BASS THE AT ONE LEVEL.

Does that make sense? Sorry for yelling, but the topic of the thread is not whether or not I want to add a sub or if I want to have a bass knob.

I would just like some suggestions of where people might put one if they were going to do so.

Thanks,
Definitive

OP is at a higer audio level than me, but I see what he means. All the aftermarket CD players I have owned had seperate controls for the subwoofer. The factory CD player does not have that. (it really is worth it to be able to control the sub seperately)

I don't have my E92 yet but if it's like my E46 you won't have to drill any holes. Pull up the back seats, run the cable under the seats and the carpet then place it where ever you want. Glovebox, ashtray, next to the seat etc. No drilling required..

Thanks DCJAX.

The hole would be drilled to flushmount the knob. The also make it much easier to adjust with one hand because it wont just be laying in the armrest or where ever...

How about the ashtray? It's a removable ashtray that can be replaced at reasonable cost. The question is wiring though..

...I saw a custom stereo system that used an aftermarket cigarette lighter decoy as a bass gain knob. So it looked OEM. Any good custom audio shop can do this.

OK cool, I guess I misunderstood you. My point was you could get it to the center console without any major modifications. Once you're there you're on your own.

Ryan: I knew what you meant, I coule have let you know that so my response didnt sound that harsh.

As far as the ash tray idea: It is a great Idea. The only thing is that I dont want to have to open anything to adust it. I listen to my whole Ipod on Shuffle most of the time, so I want to be able to adjust it very quickly and frequently.

I think that I will just get it over to the driver seat area this weekend and then figure out where I want it. Ill prob do the plexi bracket I was talking about. I just figured out that it wouldent even need to be an L. It can just be a straight rectangle.

Ill post some pics after I get it done.

how big is that gain knob? i think the armrest will probably work the best or in the glove compartment (also kinda reachable when driving) otherwise you can think of installing on the door compartments.
(i'm assuming that this 'knob' is a small sized thing)
just my $0.02

How about this:
Where the dash/center stack makes a lip over the ashtray, mount it upside-down on there. Not sure It'll fit, but it'll me descreat (sp?) and the holes will be invisible if you remove it. If it works please post pics! Just not sure how big it is and if it'll fit.

and btw, i don't like your new sig, the red circle around the guage reminds me of the annoying red circle indicator light that illuminates on the IS 350 when you hit high RPM's or over 80 mph. just my $.02

I have mine placed under the steering wheel...kinda far underneath, but it is not visible at all, but kind of a pain in the ass to adjust...I adjust mine very infrequently.

If you do drill any holes, do it in a smaller and cheaper part that can be easily replaced should you ever trade in or sell the car.

i know the op didnt want it in the center console, but that is where i put mine for those of you interested in how i did it.
this is where i have it:

starting from the trunk, i ran the wire under the backseat and tucked the wire.

i continued to run the wire underneath the trim of the right rear passenger side.

i continued to run the wire underneath the trim of the front passenger side also.

i ran the wire up and behind my dvd player. the wire is tucked and hidden underneath the panel of the foot vent.

i continued to run the wire up the center console by tucking the wire.

i lifted the center console trim and pulled the wire up through there.

i took the rubber insert out of the center console to pull the wire up to be able to connect to the bass controller. the only thing i cut was the rubber insert; so the wire could come up through it. once again, here is the final pic of where my bass controller is.
