Just removed Clutch pedal spring (mod)

Read about it on another M3 forum and the guys were taking the clutch pedal springs out. Has anyone else done this? 15 minute job. I looked at how it worked before I removed it and basically it's a spring that works upon release of the clutch pedal. when the pedal is traveling back up it helps slow it down. Kind of like a door closer. However now I notice the pedal has a lot of side to side slop. So I may have a worn clutch pedal hinge bushing.

Where I found the DYI mod. Only benefit is the clutch comes up w/out a spring buffering it. that's what BMW calls it... a return buffer spring.

Edit- Been doing some research regarding the side-to-side play the clutch pedal has... it's not related to this spring. Looks like it's the pivot bushing and/or the pedal itself. There are some aftermarket pedal bushings that will tighten up the side to side play. I think when you remove the buffer spring it just becomes more noticable. I'm leaving the spring out and going to get the aftermarket bushings.

after reading this.. i will be doing this on my day off.

Quote:
The real reason for this... when I release the pedal, you can feel the engagement point much better, instead of the wandering/vague point with the spring. I never feel comfortable with the spring installed, as it feels as if the engagement point is never quite same from one day to the next. Now, the lever release is linear...no change in pressure from one inch to the next.

Wow, never heard of this before. I just installed the "clutch stop" from n54tuning.com, and next week will be doing the clutch delay valve from them as well, hoping to fix these same issues. May have to give this a try after that.

both cars have the same spring with the same function, basically your clutch pedal will come back up faster!

Drove the car about 200 miles this weekend. No issues. All that spring does is slow the pedal return down. BS. I'm glad I removed it. Onto the side play issue for the clutch pedal which seems to be a rampid issue on all bmw's going back a few generations.

I need to look into this "stop mod" for the clutch pedal also... I didn't look to see if the car has a stop bumper.

A lot of folks have this stopper:

The spring mod is a must

Ok, so someone fill me in on why the stopper is needed vs the OEM??? Doesn't that limit the travel of the pedal and not move the clutch fork as far???

The clutch stop made a huge difference for me - amazing improvement, even better than the CDV "delete" and UUC SSK + DSSR. Is this spring removal worth trying?

$10.99? It's $10 with free shipping from burgertuning.com, which I kind of trust more than ebay.

It removes the excessive pedal travel between the friction point and the floor. You still get the full friction point plus an inch or two of pedal travel before hitting the stop, so the actual clutch engagement isn't altered at all. Just eliminates the unnecessary time of pushing the pedal further than needed.

hate to say it but the one Ebay looks better. But they both look cheap. I'd like to see something that's bolted with an adjustment nut. Just me 2 cents... SO I need some kind of a stop and a bushing kit. Clutch mods should be done.

I made my own stopper for $1

I can attest for the spring mod, it certainly made the clutch pedal feel more natural when I did it on my E46 M3

Wow, really
Clutch stopper and spring remove
You guys sound like your trying to make the clutch a video game pedal
I just installed an act clutch and it's stiffer and I love it makes it feel way more sportier and much easier to launch.

just did it and it feels great however there is a little more side to side movement now...you really wont notice it pressing in the clutch but when its just sitting there you can wiggle a more side to side.

either way i think this is a great mod and someone else said there is a bushing for the clutch pedal to lessen the movement. you could possibly make something out of pvc piping to go where the spring was and that should help with the side to side movement as this was sort of a support.

Removing the spring makes the clutch STIFFER overall ... I too love stiff clutches (my 1996 Corvette wears me out in 10 minutes if I get in traffic, but its sooo easy to modulate)
