Student Temporary Car Insurance?

My daughter will soon be off to Uni and it seems a bit daft to pay a full years insurance for her as an extra driver on my policy when she's only gonna be home for 19 weeks at the most.

Does anyone have any experience of using short term insurance for this sort of thing - I've done a quick google and can only find 28 day policies (at bloody stupid rates - or is it best to simply leave her on the annual policy as a named driver?

This is probably not ideal, but we needed insurance for just 1 day on a car, and did it with Aviva. Was £15 I think. Take a look and see if they offer anything suitable..

Aviva short term insurance is good and reasonable for a couple of days, but the lower age limit is 25 I think.
As Yoro says, have a word with your own insurance company.
When I was grilling the sales person about Admiral Multi Car (that I now have), to get my daughter on to the wife's Seat Ibiza, (daughter's Clio is insured on the Multi Car too) it was prohibitive on an annual basis, but for a week or so, they wanted something like £30 extra - on an ad hoc basis. In my case, daughter would only be using wife's car if the Clio died, so it is a useful backstop.

Your current insurer will probably hit you with an admin charge each time you add and remove her. Given the short term rates can be relatively high I would look at just keeping her on all year as generally the cost for an extra driver isn't that high.

You can add any driver for 30 days initially and it can be repeated two time more.
So all in all you can have somebody on your policy max for 90 days.
Each time you pay to add driver/car, but nothing additional to remove them.

Short term insurance aren't usually requested from insurance companies and maybe that's why they offered you one with a 28 day policy.
