Emergency braking

The other night, during a spirited drive, the car in front of me braked heavily causing me to do the same. To my surprise, when i hit 0km/hr, the engine was still on and the steering wheel went stiff like to lock it in place. Also, the hazards went on by itself. Interesting feature but gave me a mini heart attack

The doors would have unlocked when stopped, open windows (and sunroof if you have one) would have closed as well and seatbelt would have tensioned up as the car was preparing for a collision.

Thankfully, a collision was not the outcome for you. Do you know why the person in front braked so heavily?
