Which tires

I have an 08 e92 335i that is in need of tires. The rims are the sport package 18 inch. I need a set of tires that will improve the overall traction as with my Cobb I seem to break the tires loose fairly easily on the stock run flats. So I am most concerned with traction then secondly I would like a nice sporty tire that will upgrade the handling of the car. One concern I have is that I like the short sidewall of the rft's. I don't want a donut looking tire. I also am not too concerned with tread life. I recognize that a sportier tire will have a shorter life and I am ok with that. Any advice?

There is another category just in between Max Performance tires like the Super Sport and DOT legal race tires that we call Extreme Performance summer. Top choices in that class are the Bridgestone RE11A, Dunlop ZII and BFGoodrich Rival. These tires will give up some ride comfort, wear and wet grip from the Pilot Super Sport but have a bit more dry grip.

PSSes are the way to go, short of a tire like RE-11, RS3, etc.

It's tough to say since there are so many factors that will contribute to tire wear (tire pressure, alignment, road conditions, driving style, etc.), however I would not expect them to last very long.

I have never tried the new RE11A but i have ran RE11 on my other cars and lets just say that for the tad bit of overall dry performance, it might not be worth your money for the faster thread wear. They probably last around 60-80% of what the PSS can depending on how you drive, where you drive, and whether or not you track/autox it. Same for the Direzza Z1 (never tried ZII yet), and AD08.

For the street, PSSes make a lot of sense. RE-11s are overkill for most people.

I recently bought a set of Bridgestone S04 for the 328i and I like them so far. Stiff sidewall and pretty grippy. Plus they were on special at TR. I like the Michelin as much as anyone but they are way overpriced IMO.

All the tires mentioned are great. Also, from personal experience, the G-force Sport Comp 2's are amazing. I had those for a while and I loved them.

Yes, to clarify, the PSS is the best match for most on the street looking for max performance with decent wear.

If you're concerned at all about tread wear, the tires in the extreme performance category are probably not the ones for you. It is more common for me to see those types being used for autocross in a street tire class, or on a very highly modified car. The PSS is more typically the tire of choice for an enthusiasts for street driving.

I want to get a set of the super sports but I just called firestone and they won't install non run flat tires on a run flat vehicle. They just told me that these tires would ruin the car. What a joke. Who are you guys using to install the tires? I figure if I buy te tires from a local tire place I will save on the install. Does tire rack counter this some how?

Sears and Pep boys stores are very common to use. We also a more extensive list of recommended installers (if buying the tires through us) here :
