My car has very abnormal starts...

Sometimes it would literally start as soon as I would push the button, sometimes it would delay a few cranks and then fire up (with a bit of ruffness). Today was very strange, it cranked for the longest time, and finally started after maybe 5-6 cranks... What can be the problem?

Injectors are a good place to look.

leaky injector: happens almost only when car is left overnight and cold start. can smoke, missfire and smell gas .
hpfp: happens on a regular basis, cold/hot start . gets worse and worse till it dies and you cannot run the car anymore

Hmm... I'll have to look into causes. Because HPFP is free under warranty, but I can't imagine them replacing it until its totally finished..

Long cranks are a pretty good indicator of a failing fuel system. I'd start with the HPFP and LPFP and then injectors.

I had one fuel pump that just had long starts, usually after it sat, started out once in a while, then almost every morning, then even after it sat for a couple hours it would get long starts. BMW tried to fix this in newer software by pre priming when you open the car door, so the issue is less apparent and happens less often, but eventually you get some long starts as it gets worse. Otherwise the car always ran like a top and never threw any CEL's. The next pump never had long starts with the updated software but started throwing CEL's when using a lot of throttle, so they can fail differently, but it does sound like a fuel pump issue in yours potentially. If it was injectors or plugs, it would start fine but miss or run rough, if it is a long start, the engine is not getting fuel in any cylinder for a period of time.
