From Nitto NT 555 to Michelin PSS

Car: 2011 DCT 335is
Wheels: 19" BMW 313 Style
Tire Size: 235/35/19 front; 275/30/19 rear

Had the Nitto NT 555 for 1.5 years. When I first got them from day one the car pulled slightly to the right. AS the tires aged, more mileage, more wear the pulling to the right got worse.

After about 10 months I started to notice vibration over 70+ mph, and as more wear it got worse. I had alignment checked three times from since I had them. the first month I had them, 10 months later after owning them, and then again on 7/12/2013. Same results, nothing wrong with alignment. I even had my tires balanced, still pulling to the right, still vibration, and.....more road/tire noise

I got fed up and decided to pull the trigger on some Michelin PSS. Got them installed on 7/12/2013. The pulling to the right is gone, vibration is gone, tire noise gone....it rides like how a BMW should ride...smooth

Since its two early with the PSS I can do a comparison about what the experience is between Nitto and Michelin

Road Impact Absorption: When hitting a bump etc the impact is very sharp on the Nitto's where as the shock end up absorbing most of the impact. The Michelin the impact is more bold absorbing most of the impact compared to the Nitto's. The Michelins are more comfortable when it comes to road impact 100%

Handling: I thought the Nitto's had good handling but I had to fine tune the tire pressure to 32psi-front and 35psi-rear just to get it right. If the recommend tire pressure on the driver side door is added, the handling is horrible regardless if it is filling with air or nitro.

After the install off the PSS, I checked the tire pressure and sure enough they filled it up with air based on the BMW specs. I was nervous at first about the handling. After a few minutes of driving and pulls the handling was spot on. Later I filled up the tires with Nitro.

Wet Road: The Nitto tires were ok when new, as they got wear steering on a wet road became a concern as many times I had to slow the car down to the point where I was comfortable and safe. Even when new hitting a puddle I can feel car lose traction a bit. The Michelin experience in the rain, reminds me of driving a X5 that plowed through the wet road and puddles like they weren't even there. Was able to drive speed limited in extreme rain fall and never felt uncomfortable about the handling. The car always had traction even when ripping through water.

Road Noise : Michelin PSS does 100% better over the Nitto NT 555

I will update this thread with more progressively, especially when I do track comparison....stay tuned

Have you had a chance to launch to see how grip compares? I am thinking of these two tires as we speak so your review has helped.

No not yet.....I usually wait till after the tire has broken in as it is sprayed with some sort of Teflon protection when new.

I probably wont be out to the track till next month technically. I dont want to force wear the tire till then, but will update this thread for sure.

As of right now, the rears have not even skipped a beat on my acceleration so far. I am gradually breaking them in

What 60' times have you cut with the NT555's? I currently have General AS-03's and haven't been able to get under 2.0 with a 12.1 118.5. 11's are my goal with stock snails and I'm confident the right tires will do it.

I swapped out my PZero runflats for PSS after 4,000 miles and never looked back. On a hot day, they are like glue wrapped around my rims. Even running the stock pressures, the ride quality was greatly enhanced.

This has me really thinking if the vibration I have is a my slightly bent rim or the tire wear? My car pulls to the right also even after a alignment. I have never hit a pot hole or anything.

Check to see if the tire wear is cupped. If cupped is confirmed then that's what causing your vibration.

If your car was pulling to the right from day 1 then the tire has/had conicity or the straight line stability in the threading is off which causes tire pull

For everyone readying this make sure to get your tires "force road balanced" at least every six month if you do "a lot of mileage" on your car if you have a staggered setup. If you don't then at least once a year

nope never did it from day one, this just came about... always road forced balanced....Will look to see if they are cupped. Guess it is a good thing I am going back to PSS also...still keeping my 295 rear 245 front.

Is force wearing bad for the tire? :

I decided to go with Hankook V12's. The more I thought about it, I only go to the track a handful of times per year and they should be more sticky than my General G-Max's. I just couldn't justify the extra jack though I'm sure it's worth it if you go to the track often.

Not just that....but being able to stop effectively without skid on a wet road is something to consider.

So far I came to two emergency stops on wet road and the tires never buckled. They are expensive no doubt, and since I do track bi-yearly, and it rains here bi-yearly they were the best choice

I have heard great reviews about the Hankook V12 and they are a great performing tire. Congrats and enjoy.

Have you tracked your new tires yet, how about drag racing? Why didn't you go 245/35/19 front and 285/30/19 rear?

Yea I have but the only thing is the track I go to has terrible prep during the summer time. I didn't go with 245 front is because there would be too much rub when turning ie parking. There is currently mild rubbing with the 235 when the steering wheel is almost turn locked when parking

285 for the rear may clear with no rub, it looks like I got more room since the 313 style rims do a great job of being tucked in

Over all the PSS tires are above my expectations, especially in the rain

I've been following your posts regarding tire and sizes. Are you lowered at all? Judging by your last post, I'm looking at 235/35/19 front and 285/30/19 rear on the 313M, how does that sound?

The PSS will be my next summer tire. Thanks for your help!

Yea I have the 313M also. 235/35/19 is perfect, and the 285/30/19 for the rear should clear perfectly.

I have stock suspension, the rear is already lowered, just need to drop the front a bit more

For suspension though I am going with Eibach Coil Overs HERE and an alignment kit for proper proportion

How is your rear lowered but not your front? Your suspension sounds like it's gonna be nice. I'm thinking of M3 bits and JRZ dampers for mine.
I looked at Michelin's website, they don't make 285/30/19. The closest sizes are 285/35/19, 295/30/19, 295/35/19

What do you suggest? I often have my wife and 2 year old son in the car with me as well.

Do you have any rubbing issues? Are your fenders rolled?

Then just stick with 275/30 for the rear. If you go 285/35 then you will have to roll your fender. I didnt realise they didnt have a 285/30 I could have sword I pulled it up on tirerack when I was shopping. maybe I confused it with the PS2 http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

The stock height for the rear is low enough unless BMW did something different with the 2012 + 335is

Yea you were probably looking at the other ones. So no complaints with the 275/30? What about going 275/35 in the rear, or will that affect the handling? Thanks for all your help and info. I can't wait to order some new tires.

Absolutely no complaints on the 275/30, no rubbing at all. You are perfectly fine with those, however 275/35 based on my review you will rub with extra weight
