Limp mode...
My 07 335i constantly goes into limp mode in 3/4th gear around 3.5K RPM's when I aggressively push the car. What could possibly be the issue?
HPFP appears to be fine, I cannot get a code out of the car using a scanner. Problem goes away after you restart the car. Car has 36K mileage, no tune on it. Has DCI, aftermarket exhaust thats about it. Oil levels is OK. Just recently replaced 3 coil packs that had gone bad. |

Are you talking about a half engine light limp mode? Does the SES light come on? How does it react right before it happens?

You're going to need to pull the code. You could probably guess all day without knowing that or having other symptoms. Best of luck!

Same exact thing happened yesterday to me at the track. Every time full throttle about 4k in 3rd gear 1/2 engine light would kick in and service engine soon. I never got to 4th gear all day. Jb4 said all sorts of sensors went bad and vanos. From my research it shows vanos selenoid and I will be ordering that tonight. Will let you know outcome if you still have problems with it.

I did have a VANOS solenoid cause a similar problem, but I was able to confirm it with a code before buying a replacement.

Here you go good sir. I went into limp mode right around 50k miles for the first time. About 20k miles before that was when the wastegate rattle started. If you still have wastegate rattle, that is exactly what it is. You are losing boost and your car is smart enough to switch to use only the better of the 2 turbos. I took my car to the dealership and they confirmed this, replaced my turbos under the extended turbo warranty, and put me in a loner for a week. Now my car runs like new, if not better. Good Luck!

Today I wasn't even pushing the car and the engine went into limp mode, I listened and I could hear the wastegate/something rattle when I was decelerating/not pushing on the gas peddle.

error 3100 is the general limp mode (turbos are switched off) this is normally caused by another issue with code.

Limp Mode codes
I have the same issues with my 08 e93. 49K miles. First showed up in 2010. with only 14k on it. I suspect the turbos is not as strong as it should be. my 08 535i runs stronger w/ no limp mode issues.
The codes my indy shop recently pulled from historical database OX2DED (11757) Power management idle current mode invalid signal and OX3OFF(12543) Exhaust turbo low pressure side invalid signal. I had them pull and clean VANOS Solenoids (since there were no indications the solenoids were defective, I had them reinstalled) The Vanos Solenoid cleaning had no effect. Going to BMW dealer ship Tuesday. The last time it was there (still under warranty) They could not find a code or any issues....have a nice day. Now that the car's warranty has expired, I think they might be able to find out whats wrong. |
