ECU "Cracking"?

Pardon my ignorance, but I don't understand this business about the ECU of the F10 M5 being very difficult to crack due to its encryption and therefore there isn't a tune from some vendors.

From what I understand, there are piggyback tunes - i.e. Switzer - and there's something where a tuner uses a laptop to tune your car - presumably loading the tune directly into the ECU - Eurocharged, Velos, etc.

How can these exist without this crack?

Can someone who understands these things kindly explain?

Thanks

Piggyback units have flaws and are not complete tunes. All the others are based on the BMW factory press tune and have limited options but act like stock programming at the dealership computer. No real full tune yet as reverse engineering the data encryption is turning out to be a real pain. Think of it as running unsigned code on an iPhone that is not jailbroken.

I'm still fuzzy on how this other tune can exist without someone having cracked something -- unless it's from BMW itself and somehow snuck into the wild.

I keep seeing people say all the aftermarket tunes are the same right now - so maybe that's what's going on.

That's exactly what the press tune is. A BMW created ECU program that was used during a press event to up the performance. This was leaked and has now made its way around to a few "tuners" who are labeling it theirs and charging money to install it.

I wonder if BMW offered the tune directly and it kept the warranty....what people would be willing to pay for it...

LOL-- hilarious

I hear the ECU that the F series has under certain sections is 16 bit encrypted or even higher so that means its very hard to get into---some engineer in Germany is pounding beers right now laughing as I type.

Haha so true Vic!

I believe the encryption must be at least 128 bit if not more.

Wonder if BMW by mistake on purpose leaked the file? Very good free R&D?? They spend millions of ££££££££ making the ecu bullet proof then lose a file, Hmmmm.

There's only one person wise enough to crack the ecu code and that is Pkilla! Where is he at when we need him most.

The car itself has the key to decrypt otherwise the ECU wouldn't function at all. Someone will crack this eventually - nothing is un-hackable.

We have two options:
1. Wait for someone to crack the encryption
2. Put together a team to go to Bosch and infiltrate their DME software division and steal the encryption key Mission Impossible style (i.e.: disguises using masks, self destructing mission assignments, hot chicks to seduce Bosch employees, a mission control van to control robots, hack the alarm system and security cameras)

I am leaning towards #2.... who else is in?
