I initially I thought I had the same problem. I have an iPod Shuffle and quickly discovered that the iPod shuffle cannot be receiving power and playing at the same time. Also, make sure your device has the audio cranked up fairly high. It could be that it's playing, but you just can't hear it.

I hooked up to my pocket PC to listen to mp3 from it. There is no problem. Yes, there are 3 places to control the volume.

1. your device
2. the aux input level
3. volume of the car's stereo.

I have a 4th generation ipod and when i plug in the aux. cable from headphone jack to aux. input in car the ipod will turn the backlight on (i have that setting on in the ipod), but my car doesn't seem to recognize that anything is in the aux. input.

When you cycle thru the entertainment outputs (FM AM CD AUX) it doesn't go to AUX...CD is not highlighted cuz I haven't tried a CD yet.

Ok...so I tried again and jacked up the volume on my ipod and that worked. I still had to turn up the volume on the AUX input. But I've read on here that hooking up the aux thru the dock connector has better sound. so I plan to buy one of thos charger's with an aux out on it. thanks for the help!

I still could not get the programmable wheel button "next entertainment source" to switch to AUX. It only goes from FM to AM and back again.

That's a known issue/design feature. I've read here that for some reason BMW wanted the AUX source to not be an input that is cycled through when using the wheel buttons. Very weird and stupid if you ask me.

I started a thread on this. It seems to be a iDrive vs non-iDrive issue, because people without the iDrive can cycle to the AUX input source.

You can always use the voice command "AUX menu" (I think) to switch over instead of using the buttons.

The correct voice command is "Audio Aux Menu".
