Cupholder Annoyances
Anyone else annoyed by the cupholders in the Z4's?
If you put a big top-heavy drink in a Z4 cupholder, as many of you are aware, Z4 cupholders are not "O's", they're "C's", meaning, an "O" cupholder would form a support around the entire drink, whereas a "C" cupholder forms a support around 80% of the drink, but leaves a small gap in the support where the drink can tip. Anyone have any mods or replacements for the Z4 cupholders? I just don't trust the cupholders with anything more than a half-empty 44 oz'er, so it can't tip over. |

I never liked the stock cupholders because being located by the vents hot drinks get cold in the summer and cold drinks get hot in the winter.:sad0147:

This is a pic of the BMW (look in the Z4 accessories catalogue) cup holder in my 03 Z4. I'm very happy with it. Now if you want to drink a big gulp or something huge then I suggest you get a Denali.

I personally LOVE the cupholders in the Z4. I typically have a can of soda, cup of coffee (with a lid) or a can of Red Bull. The cupholders work PERFECTLY.
I really like how even during the summer with the top down I can have a can of soda in the cupholder and provided I have the AC on it keeps the beverage very cold. Same thing during the colder months....my cup of coffee stays fairly warm if the heat is on. I've never had any problems with these whatsoever. The only possible drawback I can see is when a cold beverage "sweats" and it can drip on the window controls on the side of the door....but I haven't had any issues with this yet. I recently purchased the Imola red armrest from LeatherZ with the cupholder insert so I'll have yet another spot to keep a drink :woot

im not a fan of the cup holders in the Z4. I kinda got one jamed when I first got the car, and now im afraid to use them because they really do feel cheap.
Im pretty sure they were an afterthought when they designed the car.

I installed an Ultimate Cupholder on the driver's side yesterday. I gotta admit I think its cheezy as hell that I have an "aftermarket cupholder" but it does the job, and does it a hell of a lot better than the POS oem ones. $25 seems like a lot for something like this, but just realize its $25 to fix a factory design defect.
Call me a skeptical but happy customer. No spillage yet, unlike day 1 with the OEM and a starbucks cup. |

Cupholder delete
The best cupholder is no cupholder
It's easy to pull the side vents (two screws), remove the cupholder and replace with a trim cover, P/N 64 22 6 918 463 left and P/N 64 22 6 918 464 right at $10.96 each from Tischer Mileone BMW.

Hey guys, has anyone experienced issues with the cupholders starting to rattle...even when they are closed?
Reach, I have to agree with you...they are a total POS for such a nice vehicle and a true annoyance.

ALL bmw cuholders are a POS! My personal theory
is that BMW lets design interns go at them. Maybe as a "thanks for your slave labor internship" reward. I've had a 325, a 740, an X5 and the Z4 and without exception they're either flimsly overdesigned, overengineered pieces of crap (z4 and 740) or undersized holes sized and placed by the one person on earth that has never gotten a couple of grande or venti cups at starbucks.
In the 740 you literally have to remove the radio/gps screen and onboard computer to replace the cupholder which by itself cost 150 (dealer quoted labor at 200) In the X5 you cannot have two cups, the holes are too close together. Also DO NOT ever place a cup the rearmost hole because the armrest/bin cover slides forward too easily, crushes the cup splattering the drink all over the center console, driver, passenger, dashboard not that i would know this first hand |

you all must be very dehidrated to need such large drinks
So far the holder have fit all my fat American sodas fine. my only complaint is that they take a direct shot from the vents. so if i am drinking a cold soda, and i have the heat on, soon i have a warm soda... oh and i know this sounds really stupid, but are poeple remembering to adjust the cup holders? I have seen a lot of people have drinks fall out b/c they didn't know they had to ratchet them tight... |

What's the latest state of the art for Z4 cup holders? (I saw the Ultimate cupholder postings)
I recently bought a Z4 M Coupe and took a 5 hour trip. So I brought a small (of course) thermal lunch bag with a bottle of water and a snack. By the time I was on the NJ Turnpike I got thirsty, took a sip, only to discover the bottle slides out the bottom of the cupholder. I screw the bottle's top back on and toss it onto the passenger seat and mentally note that BMW designers are *still* mad at US customers for asking for cupholders. My E36 M3 had semi-usable ones in the center console. On the trip back I pick up my son, we get fast food drive thru - now we have two drinks with no home. I've been thinking about trying a soda can insulator sleeve that can be folded and stored in the console. |

they are sorta annoying but they seems to work with at least decent sized drinks like a medium ice coffee from McDonalds. I think the thing that annoys me more is how the lower part of the holder makes a wear mark on the cup hold housing when you close it. I started manually folding the holder by hand before pushing it in.
