Oil sensor not registering level - no other warnings.

08 328i with 70K miles and no history of burning oil. Oil was changed at the dealership about 3K miles ago and the CBS shows oil change due in 10K miles. Have noticed in the last few week that the oil level is not registering a level at all. The little timer just spins and then times out with out ever showing oil level.

I put in a quart to see if it would register level, but still does not. I don't want to put more in for fear of overfilling. I am not getting any other warning signs about oil level or pressure or anything else. As anyone experienced this one?

Update: used the hidden menu to monitor oil temp, after about 15 minutes of highway driving was registering 97C, so the car seems to be heating up fine. After about 30 minutes of driving the oil started registering again. Reading "Full OK". Wonder if the problem has been since I have not been using the car for anything but a sporadic short trip here and there over the holidays, the oil sensor just couldn't register.

There are lots of oil level sensor threads posted in the last couple of weeks, so might be worth reading through some of them.

Thanks... I did but was not seeing any the same as my issue. Perhaps the cold weather I might call the dealer see what they say.

You may want to check your operating temperature. Maybe your thermostat is failed open (the default failure mode) and your engine cannot warmup because its so cold outside.

There is a video on youtube that shows how to access the hidden menu and see the temperature while driving.
