Looking for some community education RE:maintenance items

If anyone (or several ones) in the central or northern Jersey area would like to hold some workshops come springtime in doing any of the regular maintenance interval type things on our BMWs, it would certainly be of major help.

I finally feel as though I want to become a bit more handy under the hood and parts around it suddenly.

Perhaps it had a lot to do with seeing a lot of these DIYs that all of you have been doing to save thousands over the course of ownership.

While I am still under BMW factory warranty for 2 to 3 more years it will be nice to get a leg up on things.

I have major faith in the idea that several of us would participate- what does everyone think here?

I figured this might be more appropriate in the regional section, but I also thought by that same token that most people read this section anyway.

This is a great idea! It's something I would definitely want to participate in if I was in your 'hood.
Good luck!

I hear you Tara- it would definitely be cool if you were in my 'hood!

I know there are plenty of handy folks in the area, but not sure if they're willing to do this sort of thing though, whether because of a lack of time or perhaps resources...

The problem usually is a lack of a lift to get under a car for any real work. I'm a big believer in DIY and teaching others basics of maintanence, maybe you could ask Z&M auto if they would host something?

Maybe they could do something as part of the BMW CCA in NJ??

Fyi - Z&M Auto r trying to organize a bear mountain run in a couple weeks.

PS - i'm going to do an N55 jb4 install at a forum members home/garage in central NJ on sunday. So feel free to come out. its posted in the regional section

You can actually do quite a bit without a lift. I have done oil, brakes, water pump, thermostat, spark plugs, ac compressor, oil filter housing gasket, idler pulley and tensioner all without a lift. Probably saved at least 3k in labor costs. Having said this I plan on getting a lift when installed when we build our new home in a couple of years.

I think this is a great idea, sounds like not only fun but a great way to make new friends. I am from N. NJ but now live in KY, otherwise I would be all in. Maybe your get together will be just the start of something that takes off from this board across the country.

A lift is rather overkill for maintenance jobs. Air Tools on the other hand would be helpful by a great margin. Takes the fun out of wrenching but at least no back pains after lol.

I am not in Jersey but count me in to help out. I'll gladly make the drive.

Edit: this could be a time for some coding intro as well!

I've hosted about a half dozen meet ups last year at my place... Hopefully i can do the same again this year. Moderators kept moving my threads to the regional sections so it didn't let the idea catch on how i would have liked. But at least the local peeps r happy
