I see what you mean and its good for BMW to stick to a design philosophy. The front lights and kidneys - love them since forever!
The design philosophy applies to the interior too... I upgraded to the 3 GT from the 1 series E87 - it was great to find a familiar space inside just made better.

I was a little, but I believe that the interior of the 3GT is BIGGER then the 4 series. Plus I think when we see a 4 series in the flesh it will have more of a VW Passat CC / Merc CLS class look about it, as the 3GT stands taller as well

There are indeed a lot of similarities, designwise.

But size matters, see this comparison of 4 Series GranCoupe (F36) vs 3 GT (F34)

Length: 4638 / 4824 mm
Width 2017 / 2047 mm
Height 1389 / 1508 mm

The 3 GT is a bigger car, with substantially more legroom for the rear seat passengers.
