RIP Water Pump

Well, it happened. The dreaded Water Pump gave out on me yesterday.

Was driving in town and all of a sudden heard a very loud whirring noise. Thought it was the truck next to me, until I pulled into a parking lot and realized that it was my radiator fan working on max speed.

Checked my codes through the AP, sure enough, I had the Water Pump Speed Deviation and then the Water Pump shut down.

Great.

I drove home, all highway, low rpm, parked it. This morning I did the water pump status check (ignition on, heat on max, gas pedal to the floor) and i heard the water pump struggling. Cleared the code through the AP (p2e82) and tried again, the code came right back.

Is there a better deal out there for the Waterpump + Thermostat combo than on Tischer for $475?

Thanks

ebay seems to have the OEM (pierburg) water pump for about 330 shipped. I'm not sure what the OEM thermostat is, so still searching, but that can be had for around 60 shipped on ebay too. So that's about 400.

Good luck! Can you take a look at the thermostat and see who makes the OEM one?

The Pierburg pump is for the N52. The latest N54 pump is made by Continental.

My died 2 Saturdays ago at 30k miles. I was lucky though because I caught it before it drew its last breath. That day I noticed that the radiator fan would run at full speed right after starting the car. I then checked for codes and there was one stating that the water pump could not activate. I still have warranty so I had the dealer replace it that Monday.

Watch the BavAuto DIY videos if you haven't already done so -- they're great. In it they recommend coating the inside of the hoses and the quick-release connectors with a thin coating of silicone grease. That was a great tip -- it definitely made it much easier to get the hoses on.

One word of warning since I found out the hard way. Disconnect the battery. I was surprised to discover that the waterpump connector is live even when they key isn't in. I shorted it out accidently with a screwdriver while trying to move the connector into place. After getting everything back together I found the DME wouldn't talk to the water pump even though all four pins to the connector had the proper voltages (12v between pins 1 & 4, 7.8v between pins 2 & 4) and the 30A water pump fuse was fine. I ended up flatbedding the car to my local indy after spending hours searching for the problem. It turns out the short blew a 50A fuse in one of the DME circuits and that little mistake set me back $240, cutting the savings I made by doing the work myself in half.

I actually have an N51... for which I believe the pierburg pump is OEM. Do you know who's the OEM for the tstat?

BMW strictly prohibits using "antiseize" on the quick disconnect hose ends.

I believe both Wahler and Behr make the OEM tstat, both of which map to the same BMW part number.

I looked it up and you're correct, BMW says not to put "antiseize agent" on the quick connect o-rings. I guess the BavAuto DIY is wrong in that regard unless o-ring silcone grease lubricant isn't what BMW is referring to when they mention "antiseize agent". It's probably better to be safe and either don't lubricate the o-ring at all or use a little coolant if it's difficult to get the connector on.

Coolant is a good idea. I just use spit.

It is not that bad, just take your time. I did it in 3 hours and I am not a great mechanic.

OK, I am running into an issue here and its really making me angry.

The hard black connector that has a retaining clip on it (which i took off) is stuck to the thermostat. I have tried EVERYTHING, to get it off.

Any tips? Its basically the only thing that is holding me up right now...

Hopefully you managed to remove it last night, but if not, remove the retaining clip completely and then rock the connector side to side while gently prying with a large flat-bladed screwdriver. It will help if you keep the thermostat bolted to the waterpump. If that still doesn't work, try a little penetrating oil -- just make sure you clean out the connector completely afterwards, including around the o-ring.

Hah! Each "quick connect" took me like 45 minutes to remove bc I was so freaked out about breaking the plastic.
