Option 8TH (Speed Limit Info) - useful or just a gimmick?

With an M4 on order and good set of options specified, I'm perplexed by the speed limit option. My dealer was talking up a good storm regarding its use given its integration with the HUD but I find the notion somewhat comical for a car of this caliber. Is anyone including this on their build?

It is useful and actually pretty accurate, but is a constant reminder that you're speeding. I had it on my f30, but personally I wouldn't order it again.

Thanks that's what I thought. The last thing I need is the car nagging at me when I'm being "discretionary" in my application of the speed limit

I already have a wife to nag me about my speeding. I don't need my car to do it too.

What does this do exactly? Warns you about the speed or simply blocks you from going any faster? Or both?

My 10 year old e46 M3 has something like this, but I never use it. I can set a limit on my navigation and every time I cross the speed, it beeps. Pretty annoying actually. So I never set it.

There is a camera that reads road signs and tells you in the dash (or HUD) what the legal speed limit is.

It has nothing to do with the "programable speed alarm" you refer to.

It's different from what's in your e46 M3. There's a camera that scans looking for speed limit signs. The information is presented in both the instrument cluster and the HUD. I believe it has other capabilities such as displaying whether or not its permissible to pass someone.

Does it also tell you when to brake, accelerate, and turn?

I didn't order the Drivers Assistance Package on my M5 because of the Speed Limit Info display in the HUD. There is no way to disable it even with coding, or so I was told, so I didn't order the DA Package. I didn't want to be constantly reminded of what the speed limit was. It does have a psychological effect on a driver. However, I do wish I had the Blind Spot Detection and Surround View Camera features in some occasions while driving my M5. For instance, I wouldn't have ever scratched my front bumper while parking in a spot if I had the Surround View Cameras and I would be way lazier about checking my side view mirrors every time I made a lane change if I had the Blind Spot Detection. Lol!

This option is an informational item. It simply tells you what the posted speed limit is. Does not do anything else.

Holy shit coke went everywhere because I read that!

Yeah, I have also the extremely accurate spouse who keeps me well informed of every speed limit, and I don't know how to leave the lights while he's in the car without the "You're going to replace these tires if you shred them, again". Nice of him to remind me at every light that number 4 on my Christmas card list is my tire dealer.

Let's not forget the times I have had an accidental meeting with a camera pole. When pulled over I have managed to talk my way out of a ticket every time, but the nagging never stops.

I didn't want this option. For anyone not married, this would be a good practice round.

But it totally should! This is a huge missed feature IMO. The car has the speed alarm (which I NEVER) use, and the speed limit info. Why don't they put the two together? It would be super handy for driving through towns where the speed limit changes a lot and I sometimes don't notice.

So being able to set the buzzer TO the speed limit (or even better: the speed limit plus some number like 10) would be awesome.

I have this feature on my ActiveHybrid3. There was a promo from BMW when I ordered my car, 8TH was a $0 option. I didn't plan on buying it, but now I consider it a must have feature.

Like others have mentioned, it displays the posted speed limit in a white square (looks like a speed limit sigh) in your HUD, to the left of your actual speed. I never have to pay attention to the posted signs, because the camera always sees them for me. Just like anyone else, it's still up up to the driver to obey/disobey, but this just takes all the guess-work out of it.

It is correct about 98% of the time. It can get confused if you are traveling on a side road of a highway, and it inadvertently picks up the sign from the major (or minor) road, instead. It is usually very obvious when this happens!

I personally love it, and plan to order my next car with it. Along with HUD, of course.

so true. Don't need it. I like to look at the instruments whenever...not for something to remind me I'm speeding.

I think this is a misunderstanding that this feature is for reminding you're speeding. It's a quite unintrusive, small symbol that informs you if you forgot or missed the actual speed limit.

I often go on the autobahn with cruise control set to 130mph/210kph very late or very early in the day, thus there's little traffic. Sometimes there are short intersections with speed limit for no obvious reason and it happens that I - with my mind focused on the road - miss the traffic signs and find myself unintentionally going 60mph too fast or simply asking myself if there actually is (or isn't) a speed limit right now. I definitively want this feature in my next car.

Edit: I'm usually alone in my car, but if my wife and kid are with me, it's useless to ask her, she woudn't know the speed limit either. However, she's nagging me for my speeding anyway.

My mother and my aunt are the worst! 20km/h before even hitting the speed limit the nagging starts. Apparently they think I'm an excellent driver, my father and uncle said that with them it starts at 30km/h before the limit.

I don't know what it is with spouses, but it's so annoying. I would let mine drive just to avoid it, but he drives oh so carefully, even the kids complain! We are taking a family holiday somewhere here this year, and I will take the dogs with me, he can either drive faster, or arrive some other day. it's all good, I'll be getting my holiday either way.

Good idea!

On top of that, the speed limit info uses both GPS/map data for knowing the current speed limit, but also live data from a camera. For example when you pass road works, and a lower than normal speed limit is posted, the camera will pick it up.
