0-30 is LL-01, not 5-30. I've heard the better quality 5-40 edge is LL-01 as well

If you're looking for an LL-01 oil then yes, you bought the wrong one.

I've never used it, myself, but many people on here regard Castrol Edge and Mobil 1 0w-40 very highly. They are both LL-01.

I use 5w-30 but I'm switching to Mobil 1 0w-40 on my next change.

The manual isn't lying to us. It says:

Quote:
Approved oils belong to the 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 and 5W-30 SAE classes. These oils can be used for driving at all outside temperatures. BMW recommends Castrol.
Look here for a full list of BMW approved oils: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=478346

If you are one who changes your car's oil more frequently than the BMW CBS interval (12K- 15K miles) then the Castrol 5W-30 would have worked fine for you. Using BMW Spec LL01 oil anticipates you are following the BMW CBS maintenance schedule OCI.

Walmart sells 0-30 European formula.
If you are in Vancouver, I can hook you up for a cheaper price.
