Rear Pad Replacement/Warning
So I know this topic has been discussed in the past about changing rear pads and the proper procedure of enabling brake service mode, then doing the repair, then doing something else, then exiting brake service mode, enabling the emergency brake, pressing the brake and then starting the car..... I've seen posts about doing it right, but nothing about righting a wrong of not doing it in this specific sequence.
I had rear pads installed by one of those mobile brake service companies. I didn't know about the above (and apparently he didn't either). Now I'm in a situation where the pads have been installed (new sensors too) and I still have the rear pad warning light. Since the above mentioned sequence didn't happen, what do I do now? Do I need to start over and disassemble the rear brakes and then put back together? I'm a lay person so I would like to do this myself instead of having to take it into the dealership. Advice or suggestions? |

Did you try resetting the brake pad warning? I'd start there. This needs to be done as part of the process in order to get the light to turn off (it doesn't go off on it's own, even though you'd think it would detect the new sensor). Here's a couple YouTube links on the procedure:

You'll need to take it to a dealer (or BMW specialist with the appropriate software) to reset the light. Unfortunately that's just the downside to driving a rolling computer.
You "can" change the rear pads without setting off a light (Ive done it)... but once that light goes on.... that's it... dealership. I recently did a full brake swap (Rotors and calipers)... and converted the rear axle to a dual-caliper BBK setup. Then, I went and adjusted the drop links / air suspension lower too...... The computer went APESH*T when i was finished. I was getting 5 different warning lights. Brakes, parking brake, stability control, and a couple more i don't remember. Took them 2 weeks to look at the car. Took them 1 hour to fix it. Everything "mechanical" I did was 100% perfect... but the car didn't like me one bit. It was quite angry at me The fix??? Took less than 1 hour: Reset, Reset, reset, reset, reset....... done.

Anyone know if the BimmerCode App or BimmerLink can reset the brake pad warnings? I used BimmerLink to put the rear pads into service position on my daughter's '20 X1, so I plan to do the same with the X5 when the time comes...but that'll be a couple more years most likely.
