Holly Crap!! No guard rails at all!!! :confused0068:

That's like Gavia Pass... all over again(I still have cold sweats about driving that pass in the heavy fog!). I really wonder how many people each year go over the side of these mountains.

It is... until you get stuck behind a tour bus, or bicyclist or caravan/RV!!! lol :mad0260:

Note: this pic was taken in Sella though. My above pic was from Stelvio.

For someone planning a trip, what would you suggest is the best time of year to avoid heavy traffic on the passes but still have reasonable weather?

I think any time is a good time. But to get there really early(or late in the day) is the best plan. Start your drive up the pass at 8am or even before. Because by mid day it can be stupid silly crowded. Also going late in the summer... say late August or even in Sept/Oct is a good plan. But in October you run the risk of bad weather and the Pass(s) could be closed to traffic. So just keep checking the Pass websites for closures and weather.

Also traveling in August 15th(or there abouts) in Italy is so mad/insane. Its like the Italian's 4th of July... and everything is closed down or super packed!! So don't travel on that week/weekend.

Last year a friend and me drove up to Stelvio after our Sella 2.0 tour. We drove up in the afternoon(around 2pm) and it was really packed with RV's and bicyclist - not fun. We stayed at Francesca's bother's(Victor) hotel(Hotel Perego) at the top of Stelvio and there was not many people around at the summit. I found it really quite cool. Erie but cool. Here is a pic or two... ;)

Btw... it will take about 40 minutes to drive from the bottom(Trafoi) to the top of Stelvio(Bormio). ;)

The lights down there is the village of Trafoi, where Francesca's Post Hotel is located...

End of June. All the passes are open (excluding rockslides) and the summer holidays haven't started. We had some roads and hotels to ourselves.
