I have 45% Xpel XR Black on my windshield and it’s fantastic. 5% on the front doors and 15% over factory on everything else including the pano moonroof.

Nice.. I'm not brave enough to get tinted front window, but I was thinking of getting an external clear protection film to cut out UV and (hopefully) Infrared, along with *some* protection against rock chips. Like this stuff:

I have 70% Ceramic Film on my windshield. First time having it and I would do it again. Just the heat reduction is worth it. Zero issues driving at night.

Your windshield is laminated glass so it already has about 96%+ UV A and 98%+ UV B protection. Xpels windshield film is similar to a TPU layer on top of the glass (think of a flexible plastic phone screen protector). It's sacrificial, requires maintenance (to remain hydrophobic), and in many cases will require replacement after some time due to wiper scratches, stone marks, etc. it is not "self healing". xpel does not suggest it offers any additional heat protection. They only tout 99% UV protection which your naked windshield similarly has.

Valid points.. I will need to do more research.. The maintenance does not scare me though. Mostly worried about rock chips and cracks, but I know the protection is minimal.

Thanks

I’m new to the forum and last month purchased 2023 X5 xdrive. For the first time, I decided to do windshield tint, and if anyone is on the fence, I would highly recommend - even though I had some issues to start. I worked with a local shop to do ceramic coating with Ceramic Pro ION, and they offer Kavaca ceramic tint. Initially I used their high end ceramic tine called Ultimate IR 70% which apparently has extremely high UV and IR rejection. Unfortunately, I had serious light refractions and lights tripling/ghosting that I understand now is due to the ceramic qualities and thickness of this higher end tint - especially on BMW glass with HUD. I explained my issues and went back to install their standard ceramic tint called Ceramic IR. I went with 70% windshield, 25% fronts and 15% rears and I think the tink looks awesome on the car, gives it a slight shade to the front windshield.

From now on I will likely always tint windshield for the look and protection. That being said, be careful if you have HUD the tint you choose may cause visual distortion if you’re eyes are sensitive to that type of thing

For the LCI, any issues with screen dimming for those who have tinted their windows/windshields?

This was a well documented issue with iDrive 7 and I’ve experienced it personally, but wondering if they fixed it for 8/8.5?
