I somehow missed this thread the first time around. Most of them I wholly agree with, especially cmyx6go's user avatarcmyx6go 's comments about Neil Young. I can't turn that whiny-ass voice off fast enough when I hear it.

Here's one of my picks for the list that I didn't see:

I happen to love Neil Young; great song writing and awesome guitar playing. Have been hearing cmyx6go's user avatarcmyx6go's "nails on a chalkboard" comments for years about his voice and I can't say I disagree. TBH, I don't think Neil Young fans like him for his voice.

I do agree that he has writing and picking talent but when it comes right down to it, the voice is what I hear and I just can't, won't listen to it.

Here's another opinion I have about another very popular band. They had fantastic songwriting talent, without question. They were not, however, great musicians. I have a large number of their songs in my library that I truly enjoy but every single one of them is a cover that was performed by other artists. I give you...The Beatles. :scared0016:

Another favorite group of mine and I agree about their musical skills, but they played within their own limitations and that’s what made them good. Great songwriters and great singers and acceptable musicians. John's rhythm guitar was pretty good, though.

I'm the exception. I like Neil Young for his voice. I didn't care for his grunge years, but I really like his voice. I was lucky enough to see Buffalo Springfield a coupe of times live before they broke up. Neil Young's contribution to that amazing (to me) group is pure gold. His love/hate relationship with Stills carried through to the CSNY years and they created some great music together with Neil Young's voice playing a prominent role in their sound. For me, its the combination of his voice and his amazing guitar work and how they fit together. Then, add his songwriting and that is why he is so special to me.

Funny thing, my son who is now 47 years old hated Neil Young's voice because he was introduced to his music in the 90s. I asked my son if he would take the time to back in time and listen to Neil Young's early work. He said yes and then became a fan too. Just yesterday, my son and I were heading home from Lake Tahoe after a couple of days of skiing. Without asking what I wanted, he put on Neil Young's Harvest Moon album.

I get why people find his voice awful. I'm just not one of them I think he is a brilliant singer/songwriter/musician with a legacy to go with it.

Now, don't get me started on Bob Dylan.... ;)

Big time cringe. If depression was a song, this would be it.
